There's something slightly disheartening about the 26 minute runtime found on "You'll Rebel To Anything", Mindless Self Indulgence's first proper full-length since 1999's "Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy". With nearly 6 years having passed since the aforementioned albums release, one would expect the group to have a veritable arsenal of material stored up. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case.
Taking on a more 'song' oriented approach this time out, the band have abandoned their rapid-fire burst escapades in order to focus their collective efforts on material that usually plays out around the 2:30 minute range. Even so, the eclectic energy and hybrid mix of jungle, punk, dance, hip-hop, industrial and metal does not suffer, but rather now gets the proper time to develop. Extremely animated, the included songs are perhaps the bands most accessible to date, even with the jittery psychosis they fervently display.
Songs like "Shut Me Up" and "Straight To Video" retain a consistent drive with waves of 80's nostalgia surfacing throughout. While songs like "Stupid MF" and the slightly reworked"2 Hookers & An 8 Ball" find the band at their abrasively demented best. The added cover of Rush's "Tom Sawyer", much like their cover of Method Man's "Bring The Pain" from days past, has a distinct Mindless Self Indulgence flair to it and breathes mechanized new life into an old classic.
But while the material is definitely the most mature and cohesive the band have officially put out (sans perhaps their very rare debut), there are still plenty of electronic blips and raucous breaks splashed throughout. If ever there was a band to rule with an iron Powerglove-clad fist, these four are it. It may not be as hysterical and maniacal as their previous works, but its NES-infused charm is still as colorfully antisocial and snotty as ever and will surely piss off and alienate far more people than it entertains.
