Loony Binn - Live At... Eddie's Liquor

The Loony Binn are an up and coming hip-hop crew from Long Beach, CA who have the distinction of being members of the much heralded 1605 Crew, a union of artists which also boasts names like (hed)p.e., Orgy, Clutch, The Kottonmouth Kings within its ranks. These affiliations also help cast an inkling upon what to expect from this interesting four piece as they combine hooky hip hop beats with a production style that hails back to the more creative mid-90's scene of California, back when the genre was focused more upon innovative musicianship and deft laid back rhymes, rather than verbal calisthenics with weak production and bling bling, bitches and weed.

Utilizing their slick and confident deliveries, the groups lyricists blaze through their pieces with a graceful flair, spitting off sharp rhymes that sound a lot like the Kottonmouth Kings would, had they not been completely overtaken by their love for ganja. Beats are tailor made for head bobbing and the bass hits are refreshingly hard, bringing to mind the likes of Eazy-E's solo debut, an artist who they even go on to sample in one of the efforts latter tracks.

All in all, this disc is a solid outing, thick with beats that bring back memories of what hip hop was like back before it became overtaken by the glamour, women and money. There's no cheesy r&b guest appearances for the choruses, no played out catch phrases and no bullshit shock tactic lyrics. It's just solid hip-hop with booming bass lines and a general California bay area vibe. Simply put, if you're into groups who steer clear of the contemporary trends, like the Kottonmouth Kings, Twiztid, Souls Of Mischief and the Pharcyde, then the Loony Binn is an institution for you to check into.
