Take a band with the eclectic outlook of Mr. Bungle and then focus them intently on the modern music scene and you'd probably have something close to Look What I Did. Often tongue in cheek, often entirely out there, and generally quite accomplished overall, Look What I Did are an ambitious outfit with few limitations in place. For the most part the band belt out an abundance of melodic modern metal spiced up with a progressive early Incubus reminiscent twist, but this is not their only means of expression by far.
Traces of thrash, pop, punk, jazz, funk and various other genres surface throughout the course of the album and are all assimilated with reckless abandon. As such, the listener is presented with is a melting pot of musical stylings that somehow works. The group can hammer out stunning double kick drumming and violent screaming just as easily as they can slow things down to MTV friendly pop. Luckily enough for the listener they aren't at all afraid to show off such versatility and freely do so without any care for the consequences.
Overall, it's hard to really pin the band down to any set musical classification. Their songs are often highly experimental and encompass so many ideas that they can be overwhelming during the first few listens, almost requiring a tolerance to be built up. Unlike the pioneers of such a mishmash of genres though, Look What I Did take a schizophrenic approach that focuses more on freeform creativity than technical ability, though both qualities are unarguably still present. Anchored by a wealth of underlying grooves and catchy melodies, this album is none the less an impressive affair. Though perhaps the only consistent element throughout it being the bands propensity for immaturity and just having fun. Rough around the edges still? Yes, but a fun listen all the same.
