Linea 77 - Too Much Happiness Makes Kids Paranoid

I didn't know what to expect from Linea77 when I put their cd in my player. I had never heard anything about the italian metal scene (well, except maybe for a band named Crackdown, who once toured with Earth Crisis), and to be sincere, I've never heard any italian music before. Let me guarantee you I wasn't disappointed. These guys impressed me from the first second. I guess I could compare Linea77's sound to the heavier deftones' songs, with a tiny influence of rap. Of course, the band holds their own style, giving the songs their own touch.

Touch says "hello" to the listener with a huge scream which kinda reminds me of Chino's. Actually, the band has 2 singers. I dunno which, but one of them at times can sound like the already mentioned Chino Moreno from the Deftones (in the song Meat, when he sings So where's my god fear.) or even as Burton C. Bell from Fear Factory (in the song Headtide, when he sings I want my space between two rails, you feel upset for my way of life.) When the song has more of a rap vibe, the singers don't really sound like anyone I've heard before; they kinda rap with agony in their voice, I don't know, it's weird. Their italian accent is not a problem, since their pronunciation is really good and you can barely note their mistakes when singing. Extremely distorted downtuned guitars make the sound a lot more heavy and powerful. Bass lines stand out in the songs with a more rap flow, when the band uses the low-end to lead the song, but I couldn't notice anything special on the heavy songs. Drums are as they should be: played competent and powerful.

Personally, I like the italian songs more than the english ones, because I really liked the way how the italian language fit in the "pimp rock" sound. Tutto Quello Che Ho Sempre Voluto is a must hear. 90º is another great song. Both are in italian. Out of the english songs, I'd say the ones that stand out most are Meat, Big Hole Man, Nosedive and Headtide. I like how these four songs alternate moments of heaviness and melody. Another cool thing to mention is their cover of Walk Like An Egyptian, originally from The Bangles. It's amazing how heavy they made the song in their cover version.

ne thing that should be mentioned against the band is their "not so good" english. That's something that the band should definitely consider: improve their english skills. I'm not so good myself, so it's kinda ironic for me that I'm the one pointing that out, but the english problem is definitely something that can block their way into international acceptance, which would be extremely unfair for such a good band. Also, another thing that I dislike is the fact that the band's members didn't put their names on the cd's booklet. Not that this is something essential, but I'd like to know it, since I'm a curious person...

Linea77 is a band that definitely has something good and talented to show off to the people, and it's proof that good bands don't come out only from the U.S.A. or the U.K. If they improve their english I can definitely see them getting big.
