On their sophomore outing for United Edge, these east coast natives have done well to rope in their contrasting influences and mold them into a blistering guitar heavy offensive. Merging thundering metalcore with blazing technical prowess and traces of melodic death metal, the group do not only batter the listener into submission, but also stimulate them with ripping solos and fleeting moments of dynamic introspection.
Produced by Kurt Ballou of Converge fame (who also lends some guitar on the track "Obtuse And Obscure",) "Drawing Conclusions" is an album that belies this bands mere three year existence. With impressive chops they tackle everything from death-styled shredfests to concrete busting metalcore and sullen melodic interludes. There's even an acoustic closing track that borrows as much from progressive jazz as it does late 80's metal. Yet they juggle it all with such confidence and talent that the mixture soon becomes seamless, allowing them to completely sidestep sounding like the countless clone bands out there.
Undeniably there are some Swedish thrash and 80's era British heavy metal influences at play, but for once they sound like influences and not imitations. That being said though, there's no avoiding the fact that this album is somewhat limited by its breakneck ferocity. By rarely ever slowing down to relish in what they've achieved; the listener can soon be left with a case of tunnel vision that lasts until one of the interludes hits and offers up some much needed breathing room. Even so, there's something for everyone here, from brutish mosh riffing and barked screams to screeched howls and searing solos. Their craft may not be perfect yet, but it soon will be if they keep up on this advanced evolutionary path.
