Kittie - Spit
Ignore the cliches and any pre conceptions you may have about female metal bands and welcome to Kittie. From the very beginning your faced with a menacing riff and you know your in for a ride. Spit is the perfect introduction to the noise that is Kittie. All those people who judge us without hearing us? That's enough to make me spit says Morgan of the songs title. Think Vision of Disorder. Think Will Haven. Both have been likened to Kittie. Kittie's key asset lies in Morgan's vocal talent - from the sweet melodies of Paperdoll to the gut wrenching growls in Spit. Song titles like Spit, Suck and Choke are a little suspect but the lyrical content is deeper than the song titles might suggest, take for example Paper Doll, a song addressing the idea that women are merely blow up dolls. There are a couple of songs where it does slip and the mixing could have been better on a couple of tracks, but generally I was impressed. The stand out tracks are without doubt Spit, and Brackish but many of the others pale in comparison and never really stick in your head. Some of you may see Kittie as a gimmick. Four 15-17 year olds appealing to pubescent kids but the music more than stands on its own merits and whilst the consistency in song quality is not yet there, this is certainly a very promising debut. Don't write these girls off.
