This is the third release from UK nu-metallers Kill 2 This. Since their inception in 96 they have seen many lineup changes with guitarist Mark Mynett the only member to have featured on their debut release 'Another Cross To Bare'. To those unfamiliar with Kill 2 This, the band are very much riff based yet they use sampling to full effect - ranging from female opera and soul vocals to sampled dialogue, all adding to their dark and sometimes twisted sound.
With Trinity we are told in the intro "This is not some kind of sick fashion parade, this is art, this is religion, This is Kill 2 This"...a bold statement for what lies ahead, but
also one for which they sometimes fail to live up to. Thankfully, opening track 'Figure Of 8ight' more than lives up to that statement. Immediately you will be drawn in and find yourself nodding your head in approval. The sound is so huge it could fill a stadium twice over. Can it get better you ask yourself…yup. Next track 'G.OD O.N D.RUGS' takes things up yet another level with its churning riffs coupled with soothing baseline. The song more than lives up to its ‘shock’ title. As with Figure of 8ight, the singing really stands out with Mats guttural vocals as he croons, “God on drugs - no longer weeping for the world he created" It’s these kind of vocal lines that your find stuck in your head for many a day. ‘Heal the Seperation’ sees the band go into new territory. Laid back acoustic guitars mixed with violins and piano creates the perfect platform for Matt to show off his vocal talent. It feels almost out of place on the album yet maybe it was the breather we need after their up tempo slabs of metal? Whatever its purpose you can’t help but be drawn by its charm.
Now for the sore point. Last year, singer Matt created controversy by publicly criticizing Machine Head's cover of the sting classic ‘Message In a Bottle’ which is why it would take a brave man to have his own shot at covering an 80’s song. This, however, is exactly what Kill 2 This have done leaving the band wide open to criticism to which the band are obviously not afraid of. Their cover of '2 Tribes' by 80’s band Frankie goes to Hollywood sees Kill 2 This firmly imprint their own style into the song yet you have to think whether it was really necessary as it feels more like an album filler rather than a stand out track, and in the days when it is now fashionable for to include an 80’s cover the whole thing feels rather cliched and takes a little away from artists own credibility.
The good songs by their very nature make you raise your expectations. So I should have expected that not all the tracks on the album reach out and grab you in such away. This doesn’t mean to be a harsh criticism but by having tracks of such good quality, some of the other songs diver in comparison. Trinity is an album that shows fierce intent yet it shows even more potential. The heights of ‘G.OD O.N D.RUGS’ and ‘Figure Of 8ight’ more than match anything coming from the states right now yet some of the other songs on this album fail to live up to this. Kill 2 This have delivered a more than competent album. If they can produce an album of songs at the peak of their potential – we are looking at one serious album. And having already held their own on tour with Slipknot this band are definitely on their way up.
