While some have been quick to call Index Case Iowa's next big band, one listen to this latest self-titled effort will surely cast doubt on such a claim. For in a world of metalcore, emo and pop-punk, Index Case have channeled the now-dreaded formula of nu-metal, mixed it with aspects of melodic rock radio and tacked on some electronic ambiance to make it gel.
This subsequent concoction results in a wealth of mopey crooning not too far off from that of 30 Seconds To Mars mixed with a scant few bursts of aggression and an abundance of mediocre noodling. Packed with loose chunky riffs, forceful energy and numerous droning build-up's; the band routinely exhibit an identity crisis that is most visible within their doubled up vocals. While the dynamic energy is appreciated, the sheer number of melancholic leads and shouted back-ups this band plow through will test the patience of many.
Still, while not unique, the wide-eyed instrumentation and generally larger than life scope of the songwriting does sometimes allow the material to work on a catchy, if not ultimately stale level. Even so, while the ingredients may not be the freshest, perhaps the biggest strike against the band is that the songs are wholly complacent. Rather than expound upon the epic undertones in their music or indulge in some actual emotional catharsis, they instead restrain themselves, coming off like a pit bull with no teeth. In turn, barring a radio or video miracle, the purchase of this album will be a tough case to plead.
