Implant - Big Brother

Implant construct a chunky riff driven vehicle with frenetic vocals harnessed on top of intelligent song structures that don't directly collide with the listener, but still cause extensive damage. Stout song patterns thickened with crazed vocals and looming basslines are what this band serves up by the truckload on Big Brother, preparing some very interesting music in the process. Possibly comparable to a more methodical and plotting System Of A Down due to the distinct vocal similarities, but song structure wise there's more focus to perhaps a mid 90's sludgy metal sound that snags the listener with hard edged soulful riffs and sly basslines constantly being lashed with percussion. Vocally a lot of paranoia is exhibited, the CD couldn't have a more fitting title, as it suggests a nod to the classic novel "1984" in which Big Brother was an ominous force watching over everyone and everything they do. Band vocalist Ben definitely sounds confused, almost drowsy with his own suspicions and bewildered by his own aggression he proceeds into politically and socially minded rants transforming at the drop of a hat into throaty growling and chant like spoken word verses similar to System Of A Down's Serj Tankian. Genuine sounding with enough strength to gouge chunks off the listeners psyche, they nestle well within the robust song structure. Guitarwise the music features buzzing fiery riffs with a dense feel and modest tuning that unravels with styles ranging from experimental noise to straight forward high end waves of auditory hostility. Solid and sludgy, the bands two guitarists take a solid path entwining their parts together ensuring that their contributions stand out the most within the bands music, guiding the tracks through the rollercoaster like song structures. Bass is akin to a vulture constantly looming in the background waiting for the right moment to strike, heady in nature and tuned a bit lower, it dives in with strong simplistic riffs and chord progressions that round out the guitars basic path providing a solid wall of stringed instrument ability. Drums are slightly recluse with a great deal of restraint shown. Very logistical they lay down a steady beat that is slightly barebones, but that can still easily ignite throughout the songs more turbulent moments, almost ensnaring the music in a percussive trap. Tough and confident they saunter through the albums tracks giving the bands music a flashy bit of swagger. All things considered this release features some tight song structures and intellectual ravings and rants that keep the listener thinking. Perhaps best described as a more technical System Of A Down with less ethnic influence, the group instead capitalize on highbrow verbal content that comes in a highly digestible format, along with pungent riffs and systematic song progressions. Not without flaws, one possible downside could be the bands focus to the guitars as a whole, the lyrics and bass can be a bit drowned out by it giving a somewhat lopsided appearance to the music overall, but even with this in place, its still hard to be deterred from the stirring music created. Implant transplant vague elements of a few well known bands and mix them with a healthy dose of puzzled sounding lyrics and astute intensity all the while producing some of the most enjoyably thought provoking music to spring forth from the heavy genre.
