Gruvis Malt - ...With The Spirit Of A Traffic Jam

Gruvis Malt have been playing music together for years and it shows. Instantly present on this release is a mind bending caliber of musicianship as modern jazz, funk, hip-hop, alternative rock and more explode in a beautiful display of aural fireworks that literally oozes intelligence and dedication to the craft. Perhaps comparable to the likes of Jamiroquai, Incubus, Weapon Of Choice and a few other funky characters, their song writing is flawless and mature beyond their young years, while their music is instantly gripping and hypnotic, locking the listener in for the long haul.

Flush with brilliantly laid-back transitions and enough knowledge of various musical styles to make an encyclopedia jealous, the band competently fade back and forth through a multitude of styles and above all channel a level of introspection into nearly every note they play. This allows them to avoid traveling down the pop oriented route and instead provoke thought and intrigue, while also putting a smile on the face of anyone who appreciates dense and technical playing ability.

From turntables and smoothed out bass lines to agitated funk and intoxicating horns, the group are amazingly proficient and colorful, with a bevy of genres and styles being tackled and subsequently aced without so much as a snag. Smooth and instantly engaging, this album will appeal to many and its traditional tendencies and nods to past icons of the styles played are icing on the cake. In fact, its only real downfall is that it tends to taper down towards the end with a few of the latter songs lacking the substance that the first half of the record contains, but this also lets it serve as an intense burst that progressively calms down, leaving the listener satisfied and ready to spin it again.
