From Zero - 4 Song Sampler

Usually when I receive some independent CD's to review, I really like most of them, but I can definitely understand why those bands haven't been signed to a major label. I mean, to MOST labels, a band has to have more then just a bad ass sound. It has to have that commercial appeal, or that beautiful look, or anything else that would call for people's attention; and even though I know From Zero has already signed a deal; man, I have to say I'm impressed with this record and band. Every, and I mean, EVERY song of this 4 song sampler cd that they sent my way has the potential to be a hit, and it makes me wonder why this band hasn't signed a deal before. Were all of you A&R's sleepy? Too late for most of you now.....

It takes no longer than 10 seconds for you to notice how much this band has to offer. Musically, From Zero is nothing but astonishing. I can hear influences of your typical 90's metal sound, yet I can't compare the band to any of the others who make it. They definitely hold their own style, heavy and talented, yet having that commercial appeal labels want. I could try and force a comparison, putting the band between a mixture of the Deftones and Sevendust, although not carrying as much emotion as the first or as much heaviness as the second, instead the band succeedes on mixing both, heaviness and emotion, in a very unique and interesting way. In my opinion, singer Jett is heavily responsible for that. I can't compare that guy's voice to anyone because he changes his vocal style, like, every 5 seconds of the songs. He moans (not Jon Davis' moans. There's actual melody in Jett's moans), screams and sings like no one else I know. That versatility he carries in his voice is definitely important to the band's sound; not just anyone could do what Jett does with his voice. Bod and Pete's guitars definitely do a good job on providing the heaviness of the band's sound. Their guitars on songs like "The Other Side" are also heavy, yet the music sounds very melodic when Jett sings over top of it. Kid's drums and Likey's bass are both very important to shape the music in the format the band wants it to have. I must add that Kid is a very talented and versatile drummer, which caught my attention right away with his insane beats, heavy enough to probably destroy his drumkit.

It is worthy to mention that the band are also very careful with the lyrics in their songs, and even though there's some that can sound too personal at times (Undeniable, for instance, which talks about a relationship), it's clear that the band is trying to bring a positive message for the listener, and not rhyming "cookie" with "nookie" just because it sounds nice (actually, it DOESN'T sound nice...) The CD has very good production, which is also something that helped the band show what their music is all about.

Too bad this CD has only four songs. From Zero has quickly risen to be considered today, at least to me, one of the most talented bands that are still underground (but not for long). The sound they developed for themselves seems to perfectly fit what labels want, while at the same time pleases fans of heavy music. Undoubtly, they'll be going places in the future.
