A formal, if not incestuous, introduction between noise, metal, ska and punk, New Jersey's Folly are not just your average heavy band. While there are Converge reminiscent explosions of aggression present and fairly standard gritty punk elements ingrained, the overtones of ska and reggae that shadow their music are what really set them apart. Coupled with this are a number of clean melodic vocal parts that reside somewhere between the likes of Thursday and Poison The Well, which all in all, make for a rather schizophrenic affair.
From the get go the bands noise influences are by no means subtle as their songs often bounce against the walls, jumping from a vicious breakdown to straight forward riffing and upbeat ska all within the course of a minute. But perhaps the most cementing aspect of the group is the snarling punk-styled vocals and mentality they often implement, as the bulk of the tracks featured here seem to have chaos on the fringes with a solid message barked out in-between. Of course such structuring is by no means standard for the band - they do relish in mixing things up like a blender with the lid off. But if there was anything that could be a constant about their music, this would probably be it.
While some may hear the word ska and instantly move on, the way Folly approach it is actually quite interesting. If anything it almost takes on a Mr. Bungle styled flair as it is sparingly incorporated and is often juxtaposed against some viciously heavy riffing or screams. Still, while the band do get points for pushing boundaries and trying something different, inevitably not everything they attempt officially works. There's a lot of failed experiments on display and some rather ambitious parts that will take a forgiving (or inquisitive) listener to really appreciate what is being beaten into them through their speakers. Regardless of this, it's nice to see something different being done in this overly saturated genre, even if it is really 'insanity now' rather than "Insanity Later".
