Fold - This Is Your Brain On Fold

This demo CD is quite an eclectic mix of musical ideas, at first the album seems muddy with claustrophobic musical ambition that wants to engulf you in a very dense soundscape. The vocals don't flow to the music as most normal bands do, they take their own route which takes a bit to get used to but once it gets to you it hit's hard. Dru's vocals at most times can sound like Chino Moreno crooning a remorseful tone from the Adrenaline days, but his screams can kick it out with the best of the genre's. Most of the time the vocals range from an off beat almost ashamed sounding rap and then burst out into the visceral screams done by many of today’s acts. The basic line of effects (flanger, envelope filter) is used musically, nothing totally out of the ordinary in that department giving the band a very organic feel. One thing that really is interesting about this CD is the emotion it holds, at first listen I admit I was turned off by it all, there was too much going on and not a clear enough plan of attack for the music to hit me, but upon further listens it all started to grab me and shroud me in it's groove. The mellower cuts like Snatch are really powerful once you adjust to the bands musical intentions. Breakdown is also a very experimental hard song which can captivate as well as annihilate. This CD though is definitely not for all, as the style is something that takes awhile to become accustomed to. My only complaint would be that the songs lack a bit of focus, by that I mean there's so much going on it can be very easy to feel alienated from the music, but with a few more times exposure I guarantee at least one of the songs will capture your attention and if not anything else showcase you something unique this band possesses they don't use turntables or samples or extra percussion, and they don't need to because they have a style all their own, and that is something we need more of in this genre. Definitely a promising prospect in the up and coming bands scene.
