With no end in sight for Glassjaw's hiatus and the haphazard wave of clones that followed in their wake having moved onto copping Fall Out Boy and the like, perhaps the time truly is now for a band like Evaline. Produced by Quinn Allman of The Used, the group have a melodic vocal sensibility that recalls Glassjaw at their more restrained; while their instrumental outlook falls more in line with the dreamy prog sentimentalism popularized recently by acts like Brazil and Sparta.
This musical equation makes for stirring harmonies matched with plenty of serrated edges. Top on a coating of subtle effects plus acoustic meets electric guitar layering and you get a rather engaging listen. While screams may not be prevalent here, there is a sense of underlying resentment throughout the very Palumbo-reminiscent vocals that feeds off of the dense energy of the instrumentation. The funny thing is though, two years ago this really wouldn't have stood out all that much, but in today's climate, the depth of the material comes off as far more appealing.
With some clever lyrics, strong musicianship and an approach that doesn't feel fly by night, Evaline deliver a promising sneak peek at what just may amount to something more than your standard emo cash in. True, it does rely on its influences to the point where you can see them bleeding through to the surface. But even with this being the case, the band still have enough chops and unified focus to surprise, if not even impress many a jaded scene vet.
