Emotep - Demo

Emotep are a burgeoning female fronted Michigan based quartet whose musical maturity far outshines their relatively young age and short time together as a group. Led by the strikingly emotional voice of frontwoman Betty Barnes, the music slowly saunters through mid-tempo melodically ambient songs that feature a slight new metal edge. Comparable to perhaps You're Pretty or Drain STH meeting the likes of Taproot or the Deftones, the 5 songs contained on this demo have a dark foreboding quality that is heightened through solid musicianship, heady riffs rife with spacey atmospheric effects.

With a calm and almost gothic feel, vocalist Betty slowly croons her way through each song with a remorseful tone that is quite accomplished sounding, hitting each note flawlessly and accentuating her parts with bursts of Drain STH reminiscent melody. Somewhat dark, yet also serenely emotional, her sublime parts sound as though they were the words of an angel deeply tormented by her own inner demons. Guitar work on the other hand ranges from restrained distorted riffs which plunge forward with the standard modern metal crunch, to Taproot styled effect laden sonic heroics and winding acoustic passages. Bass playing as a whole is fairly modest and follows the guitars lead to thicken the riffs while percussion is a bit more animated, thrashing out snare driven beats and a generous helping of cymbal embellishment with the occasional incorporation of what sounds to be ethnic percussive instruments.

With songs that range from acoustic ballads and melancholic alternative metal to straight forward riff heavy attacks, the group are open to different ideas and their song structures are quite solid, showcasing a wealth of intricate changes and part switches. But even though they do variate their approach quite regularly, the tempo of each song seems to be fixated at a medium pace and so do the vocals, which overall can make the songs lack a general use of any stark dynamic contrast and feel a bit too comfortable. As it is though, Emotep are a bright and talented addition to the heavy music scene who possess an abundance of talent and fresh ideas to contribute. With a bigger budget backing them and a bit of guidance, the music they could create would be nothing short of awe-inspiring and though there's still a few minor kinks to work out at present, it would seem that this group already have a sound unique enough to affect the masses in a much needed and thought provoking way.
