Eighth Ground - Omnipotent Mechanism
Former band of the month Eighth Ground Showed huge potential with their first
offering "World Order/Same Old Lies" and gained a huge internet
fan base in the process. With this new record, the band show off the full extent
of their brute force with a more raw and less rigid sound than than that of
their earlier material. This new material will not only win new fans over but it
will also silence the critics in one foul swoop. The Korn comparisons are
now irrelevant and plain lazy as the band are now starting to create their own
niche. Gone are the rap core stylings of singer Jacob and in its place a more
harsh screaming vocal that gets the message across mixed with spoken word introspectives
that beg you to think. Every word is spewed out as if it were his last and the conviction in his voice illustrates
the passion. Not one other band in the indie scene will you find a more passionate and focused assault on the senses. Whether it be the eerie base
lines of "Bleeding Eye" or the groove orientated "No
Escape But Victory" they all share one thing in common with their
relentless workman like ethic.
Musically the band are still not too far departed from the likes of Living
Sacrifce, Slipknot, or even Chimaira and toolesque vocal lines
make the odd appearance. The music is still very bass orientated (perhaps a
little too much) mixed with quickfire drumming and riffs that feel like they are
scratching the back of your throat. Many of the songs take more than one listen
to fully appreciate yet they still have the power to hit you first time with
songs like "Blood Before Tears". Once the band get round the
pitfall that many unfincanced bands face in the form of production costs, we are
looking at a band who could turn heavy music on its head. We already have
one of the most promising new bands infront of us and that term can only be used
so many times before it starts to feel old. It beggars belief why an indie label
has not yet picked them up to give them the production they deserve. If you are
looking for a band who have more to say than "Fuck This World" and can
still deliever hard hitting music, you will make no better purchase than this.
