Edgy - Solitary Contender
Edgy pleasantly surprise on this album with dark inspired melodies and stellar vocal range. Emo meshes with pacified nu metal throughout the groups music with is flooded with passion and feeling from the vocals, shaping this disc up into one very enjoyable release. Take the sounds of Far and VENT, mix them with a little bit of Silverchair and give it all a genuine essence and aggressive edge and there would be a close comparison to what this band is about. Vocalist Jonas has a commanding vocal range hitting every note and pushing himself fearlessly to his limits. Just when you think he couldn't hold the note any longer he kicks it up to an even higher shimmering lyric. It's hard not to be swept away by the impressive and refined range in the vocals contained on this CD, the way they sway with life out of the speakers is truly a majestic quality and indeed the bands most intoxicating element. Although most of his contributions to the CD focus on the more harmonic aspect, there is also a tendency to explode with an aggravated rant that accentuates the music with what could best be described as a more somber version of Glassjaw. Guitars range from truthful acoustic melodies that gracefully gleam with clean tones and touching melody to educated overdriven riffage. Not confined to just one facet, they can attack with lucid harmony or a sort of sludgy distortion with a moderate tuning that steps up with suppressed anger. Bass shares strong connections with the guitar plowing out lulled rhythms that caress the high end, but have no problem kicking it up to support the more assertive riffs. Not entirely limited to being back up though, there's the occasional tendency to stand out with an almost hesitant melodic chord progression that thickens out the sound and keeps each layer of the bands compositions fresh with variation. Drums feature a tightly tuned snare that snaps with each hit and works well with the resounding cymbal and highhat work. Deep rooted in snare/kick drum patterns there is a strong grasp of their power the less is more approach that is taken downscales the music giving it a very raw honest feeling in the process. Overall Edgy are easily one of the most impressive groups to spawn from Canada, accomplished musicians covered with gripping vocals that blanket themselves over the uniquely almost emocore instrumentation. There's no heroics or flashy gimmicks here, just an honest talented expression of the bands feelings and ideas and that type of purity is hard to come by. Not much wrong can be found with this CD, except that perhaps the favoring of mellow tracks can slowly drag the disc down into a saddened trance with their lack of dynamically changing parts, but still the songs do stand out well on their own, even with the slight tendency of some the instruments to overplay their parts. The music does at times feel a bit rough around the edges as well, but for the most part it works in favor of the band. Edgy create lush tranquil melodies and blend them with an anguished edge that if given enough sharpening would pierce any listener's heart and soul, finally a band who focuses on talent and ability rather than just trying to be the flavor of the month.
