With bands as good as Pelican, Russian Circles and more, it's no wonder why instrumental music has been making gains in market share these days. East Of The Wall, a new project birthed from the Postman Syndrome/Day Without Dawn camp, are along the same lineage as the aforementioned acts and thankfully, are no less impressive.
Much like the bleak images their namesake may conjure of cold winters in communist-occupied Germany, East Of The Wall's music is a sparse, predominantly chilling affair. While the rhythm section is usually quite active and upbeat, the guitar work contrasts it by being delicate and breezy. Through the usage of jangling chords, stirring harmonics and a humble, almost downtrodden nature, the trio instill much spirit into their often epic and uplifting arrangements.
Admittedly not too far distanced from the work of the Postman Syndrome, etc., the songs featured here are surprisingly fluid and while far from dense, keep a generally rigid pacing to ensure the listeners full attention. The added intricacy and timing, which may appear as simplistic, also has little problem reeling one in or provoking contemplative thoughts.
Sure, the moody nature of East Of The Wall may be geared more toward reflective times. But even so the somber and pointed compositions with uplifting pay-off's they create are definitively captivating and should have no problem finding fans, whether they be north, south, east or west of the wall.
