Earth.ling Mass.ive sound more like an experiment in audio juxtaposition than they do an actual tight knit band on this, their latest release. Constantly pitting electronic programming against funk, metal and laid back ambiance, the band swathe out stylistically jam oriented soundscapes that come rooted in a number of various genres and dynamic contrasts, serving as a welcoming backdrop to the ever floating female and male vocals included.
From frenzied percussion and aggressive chant along's to haunting down-tempo ambiance this band have no problems diving head first into their material, leaving a dizzying whirlwind of instrumentation and emotions in their wake. It's an interesting collage of sound and atmosphere and while the only thing generally consistent throughout the tracks included is the usage of drum n' bass/jungle tilted beats, the songs still somehow keep a vague focus as they progress through wave after wave of differing sonic movements.
While on most occasions this sense of freeform creativity works to their favor, it unfortunately also works against them as the material often feels so loosely tacked together in scope that it risks disintegrating before completing its 2-5 minute journey. At times sounding like a metal band playing at a rave and at others like Esthero with a hearty dose of funk, it's quite hard to discern what Earth.ling Mass.ive are all about and while this is a refreshing quality, it will also leave many less open-minded music fans sitting firmly on the fence. Perhaps with a bit more solid musical ground the band could better express themselves and fully capture the natural energy their songs exude because in its present form, "Evolver" feels a bit too hastily constructed to truly be ahead of its time.
