Take a bunch of technically proficient musicians with a penchant for lounge, jazz, metal and everything else that Mr. Bungle combined before them and give them free reign to bounce around as they see fit and you'll have "Mise En Scene", the new full-length offering from Illinois' Duct Tape Mustache.
As the name would suggest, prolific content is not what is in store here. Instead Duct Tape Mustache are one of those colorful off-kilter bands who lyrically tackle the real issues, like diarrhea for instance. There's no denying their Mr. Bungle influence as even the vocals bring to mind shades of Mike Patton. But when putting that aside, the instrumental portion of this offering is actually quite skilled with the band liberally dousing upbeat funk and lounge-based jazz with keys and sax - not to mention a few strategically placed metallic blasts.
Grand in scope yet loose in production and execution the group are obviously playing this style of music to have fun and express themselves. That quality shines through on this effort and is perhaps the main proponent in making the included songs work. Yes the "zany factor" has been done many times over and if you own a Mr. Bungle, Nuclear Rabbit or Tub Ring album then you're not going to be in for much of a surprise with "Mise En Scene". But that still doesn't mean imitation can't be flattering at times.
