It's not uncommon for a young band to freely list their contemporary peers as their influences, but it is unfortunate when they try too hard to sound like them. Such is the case with Drop Dead, Gorgeous on this, their debut bow for Rise.
A chaotic mix of metalcore aggression mixed with noise and screamo elements, the music is voracious with discordant expression repeatedly shoehorned into 1 minute and 30 second bursts. Multiple vocalists, droning keyboard ambiance and loose screeching riffs are all rallied to the bands cause, as are agitated percussion and raw bass lines. But while there's a definite immediacy to Drop Dead, Gorgeous, there is little innovation.
Instead they sound like slightly twisted bits and pieces of everyone else. Admirably it may be an honest stab with such a brisk pace at play, but without depth or identity, the beefy riffing and serrated vocals have little payoff. All in all, Drop Dead, Gorgeous are exactly what you would expect from a band who plugs a hair salon on their Myspace and little else.
