Dog Fashion Disco - Adultery

At this stage in their career Dog Fashion Disco look to have become quite adept at weathering the chaos that follows them. Despite making the jump from Spitfire to Artemis and now Rotten since their last proper studio effort; despite a revolving door of musicians opening up within their ranks along and god knows what else, the band have still managed to deliver yet another highly entertaining album in the form of "Adultery".

This time around the group have made a few changes however. The funk influence is a bit less pronounced, the inclusion of horns (including sax, trumpet, trombones and more) has been greatly increased; and the ferocious moments have been beefed up to point where they now almost resemble the Dillinger Escape Plan. But perhaps the defining factor that sets "Adultery" apart from their previous body of work is the comfort the band now have at what they do.

Whether it be the somber country ballad "Desert Grave", which sounds like Johnny Cash scoring a Sergio Leone spaghetti western; or the twisted 50's-styled noir of "Moonlight City Drive", the band easily slip into whatever style they choose for themselves and successfully put their own spin on it. The exceptional use of unconventional instrumentation greatly helps this and provides much authenticity to the tracks as well.

Of course, the material still remains a rollercoaster ride with flowing style changes, whimsical musical schizophrenia, countless melodies, whirring keys and a healthy portion of metal-based hostility. But as abstract and animated as it is, the songs each possess their own unique flavor with the only real hiccups being the somewhat grating "Dead Virgins Don't Sing" and a sex skit that quickly becomes tiresome on repeated listens.

Without question this album will be far to bizarre and abstract for the mainstream, but for those who enjoy the likes of System Of A Down, Mr. Bungle, Tub Ring and the like, this legal form of "Adultery" is something you'll want to take part in on a near daily basis for sometime to come.
