While prolonged label dealings adversely affected Devilinside with the release of their "Prelude" EP, the group have had a relatively clear road ahead of them for this full-length debut. A considerable lack of obstacles hasn't stopped them from causing some carnage along the way however as the material found here is above and beyond that of which they previously delivered. A raging slab of metalcore in the vein of some of the groups former outfit, Disembodied, is ultimately what can be expected. But that's not to say things haven't been modernized and twisted to make this a much more violent affair.
Over the past few years the metalcore genre has increasingly become more flaccid, with countless bands falling in line to the current trends so they can see themselves on "Headbanger's Ball" and the like. From the outset of this album, Devilinside show that they aren't one of those bands. Their material is far too rough around the edges and punishing to suggest any thinly veiled leanings for commercial success. In fact, when judging by the songs included here, it would seem that the only ulterior motive the band have is to create some hideously malevolent metal and that they do it well. Although there are a scant few melodic parts, the groups are predominantly led by throaty screams, a sludgy rhythm section and a volley of disjointed riffing that revels in off-key harmonics. As a result, the band repeatedly disfigure the listener with primal bursts of intensity that ultimately shape together into a larger piece of brutality.
To elaborate, it is rare for a single track on this effort to go over the 3 minute mark as the band have aimed more for a 'collective song' rather than a number of them. While this is an admirable feat that deserves respect and quickly establishes the bands allegiances in the corporate music war; it also sadly becomes a bit of a double edged sword for them as well. Some of the more enthralling moments end all too quickly, while the constant shifts can begin to wear down the overall momentum. When the band do strike, there's no doubt that they do so with brutish strength. But with such a rapid fire pacing, it's hard to fully appreciate just how much damage they are actually causing. Regardless, if you're tired of the state of most modern metalcore (and you should be by now), Devilinside are ready to give you a sympathetic ear - that is if you're prepared to lose a limb or two in the process.
