Dark Ritual spit their venom on this release with a dark metal hue that permeates each song and incorporates the occasional burst of modern metal and experimental riffery. Like the Danzig of old on downers, the songs slowly advance forward with either lumbering, percussion driven grooves or almost Misfits like punk metal.
Vocally the effort seems very pacified and uneventful, there's little dynamic change and rather than give each word feeling and depth, they seem to come out in a chain of monotony that sounds quite similar to a dazed and confused Glen Danzig. Lyrically the effort is also filled with dark and evil lyrics that tend to lose their appeal with little energy or intensity put into them. Guitars are fairly sludgy and take shape with the occasional solo and chord progression, while the bass is slightly downtuned and plods on with an almost uninterested demeanor. Drums are energetic, yet overall lack any enthusiasm and are hindered by the general absence of cognition between each instrument, making things sound sloppy and repetitive.
There's honestly just not enough here to invoke a satisfying release. It's too timid and meandering and to a point contrived sounding. The band do have their occasional moments of hope, but in the long run tend to stick to the same thing ad nauseum and with a sloppy and decidedly unorganized sound contained in songs clocking in at 7 minutes, the end results are not enough to hold the attention of even the most alert listener. It's almost as though this is just a group of guys heavily influenced by 80's metal who dress up in black and jam in the garage when they get the time to. Sure they can play their instruments and they're not entirely serious as documented in their sedated cover of Ricky Martin's "Livin' La Vida Loca", but even it is done with the same tempo and formula the band use for almost every song which in the end, makes this EP sound like one, long drawn out song that never ends.
