Corporate Avenger - Freedom Is A State Of Mind

Corporate Avenger are a group who have made quite a name for themselves in the past few years and rightfully so, as not many other bands out there today continually receive death threats on a weekly basis. To put it mildly, Corporate Avenger are a controversial band. With a brutally unabashed point of view, they intelligently tackle issues that hit close to home like religion, corrupt police, drug use, homosexuality, the trials and tribulations of the Native Indians of America and much more. Think an extreme version of Rage Against The Machine crossed with the Kottonmouth Kings, the Insane Clown Posse and Atari Teenage Riot, and you might have some inkling as to what is going on here.

Confrontational, abrasive and dripping with sneering cynicism, the band launch into a series of furious rap based rants that pack more lyrically thought provoking venom than anything heard in recent years. With lyrics like "If Hitler was on the 20 dollar bill, how would the Jews feel?" in "$20 Bill", a song which deals with the rape and pillage of the Native Indians and their land by American settlers, the group are as controversial as they are cerebral. Musically, the album is for the most part electronic, taking shape with a very Atari Teenage Riot reminiscent flair, as they combine the booming hip-hop styled beats of the Kottonmouth Kings (who actually make an appearance on the track "Drug Dealing God") with a cutting edge, in your face punk-ish lo-fi wall of distorted noise that effortlessly grabs the listeners attention.

Some may be quick to write this band off as just another shock tactic act, with their outlandish appearance and their raw lyrical content, not too mention song titles like "Jesus Christ Homosexual", "The Bible Is Bullshit" and "Christians Murdered Indians". But those with an open mind who take the time to listen what they are actually saying may just find that there is actually some pretty empowering and thought inspiring messages contained here. Sure it may be excessive and utterly crass at times, but this isn't to say that the group are saying challenging ideas to only get a reaction. Their conviction and honesty truly sounds genuine and the implications of the ideas and questions they pose are enough to make anyone with even half an open mind at least question some of the knowledge and belief systems they've been taught to accept as wholesome throughout their lives. By expressing themselves in black and white everyday language, the bands points are easily understood, a factor which makes them all the more offensive to those who don't believe in what they're saying. Sure, some of it may be a bit too far out there for one to believe and its up to the listener as to how much of the information will be perceived as true or false, but if there's one thing "Freedom Is A State Of Mind" does accomplish, its making the listener think. Bands like Rage Against The Machine may have tackled more "important" issues in their time, but they were also issues like liberating foreign countries, overthrowing economic systems and other wide scale things that most kids from middle America had no interest in. Corporate Avenger on the other hand tend to tackle points that are more tangible and do so in a way that is easily understood, making this bands combative message ten times more potent.
