Comadose - Re-Up

Comadose kick out a brutish brand of New England area metal that for the most part resembles that of groups like Eastcide, Snot and Sevendust. Combining aggravated rap styled outbursts with pained screams and the occasional melodic passage, the band plow through loosely assembled detuned guitar riffs, intermittent turntable scratches and pugnacious drumming to get their point across.

Gruff and unrestrained, the albums vocals feverishly erupt into pissed off raps and menacing screams that come rounded out by melodic passages, while downtuned guitars rake out their territory with start and stop riffs that are entirely too predictable. The bass playing is fairly complacent and backs up the guitar with a treble heavy lowend that leaves little impression while a riotous drumming performance that is entirely too crisp fails to generate much motivation at all. The band augment their sound with amateurish turntable scratches that sound cliche and rigidly implemented, doing little to broaden the bands sound and at most times wind up feeling tacked on in an ill mannered fashion.

Overall the band try desperately to build up and prepare the listener for a powerful momentum that sadly never comes. With the lack of solid grooves, they thrash about underneath dated sounding rap metal heroics that go nowhere but downhill. The composition and construction of the songs is ramshackle at best with turntables and raps roughly slapped together and with nothing new being brought to the table, the album quickly becomes uneventful and stagnant. They do indeed sound angry and adamant about spreading their message, but its hard to take any of it seriously with the songs pointlessly slamming around back and forth, going through the motions that have been traversed by innumerous bands before them. In the mid to late 90's, bands like Comadose flourished but the movement was for the most part short lived, mainly due to the lack of any solid song writing. Sure the music is energetic and it may appeal to a select few out there, but for the most part those who have been listening to the combination of rap and metal for even a short amount of time look for at least some substance and depth, both of which are in short supply on "Re-Up".
