Despite their low-visibility Celebrity have remained dedicated to their art of progressive post-rock and as underground as they may be, they don't seem to have to dig very far into themselves for the bulk of "Mining For Twilight".
Stacked with ponderous songs led by cumbersome bass lines and lingering droning guitar parts, the band seek to draw the listener in with a heartwarming, if not mysteriously amorous vocal delivery. Engaging to be sure, yet very sparse in composition, the bands material possesses a yearning energy that keeps the listener plodding along to the songs completion.
With such a stripped-down approach taken, the core of the songs are exposed and for better or worse, this vulnerability can work both ways for the band. Much like the now defunct CA-based Quitter, there's an early U2 meets Failure vibe present, but there is little to no grandiose pomp. Sure the crisp structuring and slow burn build-up's do cause a few of the less focused tracks to wear thin, as does there hopelessly somber demeanor.
But in some rare cases a continual drowsy tempo and a gradual inclusion of sonic layers can build up to something greater than the sum of its parts. On a number of tracks included here, this is exactly the case. While it may not be a sure shot with each occasion and tedium can set in here and there, anyone seeking shelter from faux retro bullshit and sappy pop rock should find some well met relaxation here.
