Brougham - Le Cock Sportif
Brougham take the rapidly aging book of whiteboy rap and write yet another chapter here, with their sultry mellow paced raps and eclectic beats. Chameleon like in nature, the tracks range in influence from early 90's Bay Area gangsta rap to AC/DC and Sesame Street dragging along everything in between. Catchy flows collide with tripped out beats and solid production on this album, that is not so much a record that holds any real statement, but rather one that jogs through humorous self reflection and story telling raps. Coming off like a cross between 2 Skinnee J's, B.T.K. and the Bloodhound Gang, the lyrics are spit out with little thought as they hit with hooks like "I Don't speak english, my name is Moe", but their overtly playful nature is what actually provides them with a certain charm, that inevitably gets them uncontrollably stuck within the listeners head. Sounding somewhat reminiscent of Jimmy Pop Ali of Bloodhound Gang fame, but without the deadpan delivery, rhymes are spit littered with obscure references of pop culture and humorous tales that can stretch from locktight rhymes all the way to verbal babbling that sounds like it was thrown together just because it fit. A rock oriented approach is taken to each song for the most part, but it is not a necessarily defining factor, this comes across quite vividly on the track "Main Chick", which sounds like a colorful journey though late 70's Saturday morning cartoons. Groove laden basslines and competent style variation set this band apart from being a basic rapcore band, and their music also focuses more on a straight hip hop approach that utilizes effects, turntables, sampling and repetitious beats, rather than verse/chorus structures and aggressive riffs. The sedated delivery and offbeat lyrics manage to not stereotype the group into any set genre and while great white hopes like Kid Rock can go on for days about being "white trash from the trailer", these boys sound like they couldn't even remember their own phone number, let alone where they're from as a result of the excessive consumption of bong hits, beer and junk food from the night before. Sadly though this can become a bit tiresome, as the songs lack any real purpose and fail to invoke any intense feeling, which is a definite con for those looking for a direct release of emotional tension. But still, in their favor the music they create seems almost perfect for a night of chilling out while blazing up a bowl or driving around piled into the parents car in the summertime heat. Brougham carelessly churn out hooky tracks filled with amusing wit and eccentric beat composition, and although at times it can sound about as cheesy as a bunch of stoned college kids trying to freestyle along to an episode of Rapcity, its still crafty enough to come recommended for those who just don't really give a fuck and want some great background music as they get high and chase chicks.
