Like Hatebreed with a bit less Slayer worship, Black My Heart are a tough as nails metalcore outfit who seek to incite a bloodied mosh while perhaps also sparking a few minds to their straight edge ideals.
Big menacing riffs lay down the law, using chunky distortion and repetitive build-ups to break the listener down with the demeanor of a merciless prison guard. A meaty rhythm section with moderately detuned bass lines and a punchy drumming performance keep up a rabid pace. While these elements may be quite standard, there's enough muscle behind them here to cripple. Especially with throaty barked out vocals and the occasional gang shout so eager to get right in the listeners face.
A blunt, unforgiving listen, "Before The Devil" embodies the spirit of modern tough guy metalcore. That said, while it is refreshing to hear a band not hung up on emulating euro riffing or adding in melodic choruses, the dynamic of Black My Heart's music can be a bit one-sided by the albums end. Surging riff, gruff vocals, breakdown, repeat. Even so, the conviction behind it all is enough to keep one coming back for another beating.
