A Perfect Murder - Unbroken

Picture this, you're sound asleep and a bunch of burly French-Canadians burst into your house and start wrecking shop with bats. You'd probably wake up pissed off and ready to fight, but you'd also be a bit fearful too because you're outnumbered and well, they have bats. That's a lot like what one is met with on "Unbroken", A Perfect Murder's Victory debut. A bruising assault out to break bones and ensure they stay that way, the band unleash the instructions for a mosh on pretty much every track included.

Similar to their peers in groups like Hatebreed and Throwdown, A Perfect Murder aren't really out for finesse or precision. They'd rather just bludgeon you with menacing vocals, repetitious chunky riffs, sludgy bass lines and stampede-like drumming. So not surprisingly the core fundamentals the band adhere to here are that of standard tough guy metalcore. But while they have this routine down pat and bring a truckload of palatable aggression along with them for the ride, there is also another key element in place. This being the traditional metal overtones which the group tend to punctuate their material with. In turn, a ripping old school Metallica-styled solo will occasionally tear off like a string of firecrackers as the band temporarily take a break from jackhammering the listener senseless.

While this element isn't exactly exercised enough on a song by song basis to keep the listener guessing, it still makes for a nice unexpected touch. Let's be honest though, while A Perfect Murder do bring ferocity, crushing riffs and a hunger for destruction to the table; they'll still be waiting in line for their dessert as they aren't exactly the only band doing something similar. The incorporation of more traditional metal influences is a good start - hell, there are times when the band even bring out a doomy overbearing riff that sounds like it got trampled and forgotten at an age old Black Sabbath sound check. But being that such stylings are implemented more as garnish rather than the main course, they really don't make that much of an impact on the albums overall bearing. In the end, "Unbroken" may shatter a few ear drums and ensure some bloody knuckles, but the limits and barriers that have long boxed in this area of the metal spectrum once again escape without harm.
