Believe it or not the quality of North American metalcore finally looks to be improving. Take A Love Ends Suicide for instance, while their genetic make-up may be the same old mixture of whirring Euro-tinged metal mixed with hardcore's pugnacious ready to rip your face off attitude; the band manage to actually make it sound worthwhile (well, for the most part) by keeping a watchful eye on tempos and melody.
Sure, being signed to High Impact, the label headed by As I Lay Dying frontman Tim Lambesis, definitely doesn't hurt their credibility. But more often than not A Love Ends Suicide succeed on their own (and sometimes borrowed) merits. Convention isn't lost on the band as clean emphatic vocals are paired up with beefy screams overtop of breakdowns and dynamic harmonizing. These are of course alternated with hoarsely barked vocals, vicious riffing and pounding double-kick drumming.
But while "In The Disaster" may be built out of the same materials as many other recent albums, it's in the construction of it where things start to stand out. First and foremost, the blistering dual guitar work, with its swift technical prowess and vigorous melodies, not too mention highly-spirited solos, shows off more finesse than usually found in a band like this.
The songwriting is also a bit less predictable than you would expect with the band sporadically reaching out past their expected comfort zone. Admittedly these forays into broader territory don't last for long, but the fact that they are there shows this band has potential to grow, while averting disaster in the same instance.
