A Jealousy Issue - If The Flames Don't Kill Us...We Will

South Florida's A Jealousy Issue may have initially attracted attention due to their association with a few well-known ensembles, namely Poison the Well and Keepsake, but once the dust settled, fans began to realize that there was more to this quintet than name value alone. The "Somebody Shoot Me, I Think I'm In Love" EP dropped into a scene frenzy when it was released, unabashedly capturing the band's emotionally metallic hardcore concoctions. After setting out to record a follow-up EP the group quickly realized that they could assemble a much more intriguing release, and soon set their mind to not only recording a handful of new songs but also re-mastering the previously released EP; all of which has become "If The Flames Don't Kill Us...We Will". Once again teaming up with producer Jeremy Staska, these men have created a tumultuous metalcore grenade that matches their early energy with an amplified heaviness, providing listeners with a convenient timeline of their young career.

You can notice the band's progression quite clearly, as the newer tracks carry a thicker, more metallic tone and have stripped away a substantial portion of their melodic slant in favor of straight-forward brutality. Where much of the group's older material had a detached, almost sterile feel to its guitars, the band have now allowed themselves to absorb this piercing tone, churning it into a taut cyst of meaty hardcore. This thicker style is led by Cristoph's bludgeoning bass presence, which savagely beats the listener into submission. Of the newer offerings, "Scheming, Dreaming Juggernaut" seems to the most accomplished. Laying down a chunky metalcore behemoth of noise that lives up to its name, the track provides one hell of a closing breakdown that will likely cause a deadly pit to erupt when performed live. While Duane's singing once seemed balanced on the verge of breaking, here he has settled into a menacing, throaty growl that abandons the more fragile screams of his past. His growing confidence has allowed his boisterous assurances to take on a whole new sense of conviction, and when he bellows "You'll never forget us" you may actually believe it.

This is not exactly a new release from the band, as the majority of the album is taken up by the re-mastered songs. The few new offerings are then stapled on along with a cover of Wake Up Dead's "Psychology Of Optional Experience" in a manner that acts as an incentive directed towards fans that have already purchased the earlier EP. With that said, the re-mastered songs do sound even better now, and while there is some inconsistency when it comes to the album's pacing due to their inclusion, it is nice to have all of these songs in one package. The group are quickly distancing themselves from the Poison The Well formula that they adopted to an extent on their earlier material, and this more visceral heaviness appears to be the wise move. While the newer songs do have a rougher, less polished crunch, the intensity found within lends to a more tangible live feel. "If The Flames Don't Kill Us...We Will" may appear to be a scrapbook vision of what A Jealousy Issue have kept busy with and it could disappoint those hopeful for more than a few new songs, but considering it's structure this is a solid metalcore release that holds its own alongside the metalcore ranks. If the band continue to progress in this way and stay focused on establishing their own distinct sound, they could easily find themselves perched at the top of the genre's pecking order in no time.
