KoRn with a little hip-hop influence. That's all I can think of while listening to Throe; and, although some of you might be thinking: "Damn, another KoRn copycat", I'd say: maybe. Yet, the band makes it work as no other, creating music that exudes emotion and aggressiveness in large doses for the ears of lovers of the style.
Singer Joe is without a doubt a plus for the band, due to the fact that he can not just do all the things that Jon Davis can (which is not much, ok. I know that.), but he also can rap. One thing that I like not only about Joe, but in the entire band, is that in those "moaning - screaming" parts of the songs, they can actually transmit emotion in a very competent way, something that you don't find very often in a "copycat" band. Downtuned guitars with a heavy use of effects are played by Alex and Face, who come up with those riffs we all know, which are strongly influenced by KoRn's self-titled CD, and that works very well for the band's musical style. Bassist Dave and drummer Lloyd create the background. Dave doesn't compromise, while Lloyd is a good drummer, yet at times he lacks aggressiveness. A harder beat on his drumkit maybe would make their music not only more aggressive and heavier, but also cooler.
Throe's song's structure, though, should be varied more often. Most of their songs sound too much alike. One thing that Throe makes repeatedly in their music (once again, influenced by the almighty KoRn), that ends up getting boring, because they do it in like every single song, is that they come up with a sentence like "I do it for the pleasure of the kill" and singer Joe repeats it like 20 times, each time increasing the intensity and heaviness in his voice a little more. Overall, though, the music Throe shows off in their self-titled EP is solid, which depicts the band's potential, and, even though we all agree it isn't the most original thing ever, I'm sure it is able to proportionate at least a little bit of fun to anyone who listens to it.
Besides the fact that the CD recording isn't done with very good quality, which made the band's music sound a bit too raw for me, I guess what really puts Throe's EP down on my list is it's lack of originality. Even though the band is competent at what they do, I'm sure there are already plenty of KoRn ripoffs in the scene, and we don't need another one. The band should definitely try to shape their music and mold it into something of their own personality, because they have enough skill to do so.
Throe's debut EP basically lacks in originality, but I'm sure the band will be finding their own route as they continue to work on their music and consequently, evolve. If all goes well, maybe we'll be hearing more about Throe in a near future.....
