Somewhere between having a message and inciting a sick mosh, metalcore became the musical equivalent to Mr. Potato Head. You've got Atreyu's emo choruses here, the modernized old school NYHC-inspired tough guy pummel of a band like Terror there and a few allusions to the likes of Job For A Cowboy-styled deathcore. Hell, you've even got a few fast chant/gang shouts that almost sound like Downset. for ironic throwback novelty.
The thing is, despite the random configuration, you still have the same Mr. Potato Head. A solid product that is functional, entertaining and yet boring after the first day. That said, you couldn't do better to tailor a release to the current trends. Nearly each track included on "Comes From The Heart" has all the prerequisites to whip a mosh pit into a fervor and ensure the girls at the back can sing along to the occasional hopefully crooned chorus.
Sure it's energetic and youthful and feels like it's played with conviction. But it takes more than a melodic interlude with electronic flourishes to stand out in the racks at "Hot Topic" these days, or does it? Perhaps that's the problem. Kids have yet to catch on that metalcore is nu-metal in ironic t-shirts and tight jeans, and thus labels can continue to flood the stores with albums like this that sound entirely identical every week. In turn, "Comes From The Heart" will probably only have longevity for you if you have x's surrounding your online name - otherwise it's just another passing distraction.
