Star Island - Quadrophonic EP

Star Island. Get use to the name because it’s going to be on the tip of every emo kids tongue in the near future. Formed in 1996 and hailing from New York, this is the bands debut EP. Well where shall I start? Rarely have I been so moved by a record. The emotion conveyed by the singer feels so true, and is backed up by layers of sound that blend together to make awe inspiring music. ranging from acoustics to a smooth distortion – vulnerability to empowerment. This is certainly one heck of a ride. The guitar sound is spot on, the vocals are unique…. the effects are intricately placed. I found myself immediately immersed in this record, with its dark, broody almost hypnotic sound. The quality of song writing is evident from beginning to end. opening song 'Hazitall' hits you like a wave of emotion, with its delicate vocals and haunting 'eerie' effects you are left speechless. Singer Anthony, is able to switch styles within a breath.

At their most subtle the acoustics offer a perfect platform for singer Anthony to spill his guts, but it is when the vocals are at there most pushed that he comes into his own. the bands darker side, is most evident on 'Mr October'. The song has a menacing bluesy feel to it that could almost be called retro and as Anthony spits out "mr october" you can sense almost a spiteful feeling, in contrast to his often shy and vulnerable vocals. Upon listening to this record I feel like I've discovered a lost artifact..its times like this when you realize that music is a true art form. Star Island are one of the most versatile and dynamic bands I have heard. If you like heavy. Emotional music. I suggest you get yourself a copy!
