Shun - Michael In Reign

Tennessee's Shun represent a fresh new hybrid of sound, clashing the open minded song structures of groups like dredg with the subtle harmonic touches of Failure and Far along with the breath taking ambiance of the Deftones. But don't be confused, for this group have firmly established their own sound and the captivating music that is so carefully laid down on this heart wrenching disc is pure and utter bliss.

With some of the most infectious, most warm and sincere vocals ever laid down, the songs shimmer through haunting sound scapes that truly grip the imagination without having to sound dark and twisted. Indeed there is a dash of torment and an underlying thread of sorrow running through the music, but its expressed with a positive outlook and epic songs that are focused and progressive. Like a sonic cleansing, each track takes a different turn with everything from slightly experimental to lumbering emotion that spills out from each and every member like blood from a fresh wound in slow motion. With serene and ethereal guitar plucks gracefully guiding the way, humble basslines slowly shaping the curves like a hand in the snow and a light dose of eclectic percussion to generate momentum, each song lightly tickles the listeners senses leaving sounds as beautiful as the streak of paint left on the canvas by an artists brush.

Though many may be confused and think of the band as sugary coated emocore or other styles similar, the plain fact is that Shun are a band that defy all the rules, they're not new metal, they're not emo, they're not metalcore, in fact they're like nothing else out there at the moment. Their music is aggressive and distorted, yet painfully true and emotional, drenched in melody and aural nuances that have an abyss like depth. Amazingly talented and gifted, this band have captured both the sadness and ferocity of one whose caught in the pouring rain with a broken heart, searching for answers, breaking down and questioning themselves with each step. Heaviness doesn't have to rely only on anger and this bands music is almost like a testament to that. Its enrapturing, its brilliant and its moving, ladies and gentlemen it is Shun and long may they reign, for they are easily one of the most though provoking bands to ever pick up instruments in the past decade.
