Resister - Demo

Hailing from the U.K., Resister are an impressive up and coming crew who look poised to tip the current trend of cliche heavy music on its ear. Sounding like a PCP induced gang brawl between Roni Size, Public Enemy, Pitchshifter, Prodigy and Atari Teenage Riot, the band are fierce with conviction as they charge forth with electronic bombast, grating guitars and a gritty frontman whose rap based delivery is intimidating enough to send a hardened criminal running for cover.

With disjointed raps combatively spit off the hip in an aggressive almost DMX meets Chuck D reminiscent manner, the band launch into a careening soundscape of outlandishly programmed, yet thunderous 808 bass hits, mixed with a flurry of violent sampling and the occasional distorted guitar riff played rather unconventionally. Intensely heavy and rife with a throbbing electronic edge, the group also combine haunting rumblings of booming bass lines with a chaotically minced arsenal of alien sounds and then proceed to explode into a searing sonic wreckage that is as disorienting as it is cathartic. With the assistance of a vengeful pummeling of drum machine based percussion, the material contained here is creatively composed and inherently antagonistic, demanding attention with a frenzied tenacity, while simultaneously pushing the listener to the brink of alienation.

Though such a description as that offered above may lead one to think that Resister are a disheveled mess of electronica/industrial meets modern metal and rap, this could actually not be further from the truth. The composition and cohesiveness the band are able to achieve with such a seemingly disarrayed wall of noise is utterly impressive, and the raw urban edge that the hip hop based vocal performance gives, elevates it all to another level. Its catchy, yet innovative and draws the listener in through its novel approach, rather than some flash in the pan crafty gimmick. Still, at present there are a few rough edges and the production tends to feel a bit lo-fi, but for an independent offering, this can generally be overlooked. Perhaps the only thing that is not in the groups favor overall, is that their sound is likely to be too progressive for the bulk of today's contemporary audience who are used to slickly written songs and traditional instrumentation. But those who are more open minded and prefer something a bit different from what the mainstream has to offer are definitely in for a treat because Resister are able to serve up something that is unique enough to force even the most jaded listener to take a step back and evaluate just exactly what it is they're hearing, proving that there are still a few new areas left to traverse in the field of heavy music yet.
