Noise Therapy - Tension

A jagged dose of modern metal with enough hooks to make Hellraiser jealous, Noise Therapy have spent a lot of effort revamping their sound in the years that have passed since their last release. Enlisting the standard dense nu-metal approach as their home front and expanding upon it with ascending melodic choruses and darkened moments of introspection, the group have created a riff heavy package that brings to mind the likes of say 40 Below Summer and the Slaves On Dope crossed with traces of more traditional melodic metal influences like Life Of Agony and such.

With a raspy, yet empowering medium vocal range and a wealth of ferocious throaty screams to convey his aggression, band frontman Dave Ottoson keeps the music interesting with a dynamic performance that thrives on versatility and uplifting choruses that are commercially friendly enough to warrant radio play, yet still express the necessary amount of emotion to keep the listener entertained. The guitar playing generally takes shape through a disjointed framework of detuned nu-metal styled riffing that is perhaps a bit sparse in structure, but lacks little in energy and force as its driving staccato rhythms definitively shape the songs. The bass playing is slightly detuned as well and compliments the guitar work with steady handed progressions and roomy plucks that often syncopate their attack together with the trenchant drumming laid down. Some atmospheric keyboard playing is also on hand and as expected, its occasional inclusion diversifies the music and gives it a more spacious depth to work with.
As a whole this album offers up a competent take on the standard new metal sound that has risen to prominence over the past few years. The material is easy to get into thanks to the bands strong writing skills and with its large catchy choruses that for some reason don't sound overtly commercially intended, the group are able to remain relevant and avoid most of the typical cheesy stereotypes that have clouded the talent pool in recent times. That said, despite a few shining moments the band don't really not offer up anything extremely new to the genre as groups with a sound similar to theirs are a dime a dozen. They do have a few strengths that easily set them apart and their music is definitely of a higher caliber than most of their peers, but without an unquestionably distinct sense of individuality it will likely be a hard task for them to break out of a scene that has become bloated and stagnant in recent times. This is not to say they are a cookie cutter band, but they could easily be lost in the pack as there is no shortage of groups of the same ilk. A solid album from a band with potential, but more uniqueness rather than the polish present here will be needed to make them truly stand out.
