Munkigrip - The Idea of Not Knowing

Falling somewhere between the chartered regions of Skinlab and Pissing Razors, Atlanta based Munkigrip come from a more traditional metal standpoint. 'The Idea Of Not Knowing' is metal being performed somewhat predictably but that shouldn't put you off as they certainly rise above many in the underground stakes.

S-n-k is a brutal introduction to the sound that is Munkigrip. With it's pounding tough guy groove, you get the feeling that if they were drilling for oil they would be millionaires. S-n-k also shows off the bands dynamics, as half way through the song we see an altogether subtler side that works brilliantly with harmonic vocals. Thankfully, this dynamic nature runs throughout the album which clearly defines them as a cut above the rest. Musically this band are tight and talented musicians yet they stick to a tried and tested formula for which they have mastered perfectly. However, having formed less than a year ago, we can forgive them for this. The double bass pedal injects a heaviness that seems to be lost in recent years amongst many metal bands and the drumming is a key element at the forefront rather than just a method to keep time. The Vocals at times feel plain and un produced but for the most part they inject passion and sincerity. Every word is said with fierce intent. Take 'Way Down Inside' for example as he spits "No, I just don't know. Say it and let me go." That line was stuck in my head for many a day..

'My God Bitter' is an anti religion song which could raise eyebrows more for its lyrical content than musical substance. The lyrics are certainly risque as it begins with the line "you fuckin Jew"….just don't ask this band to play bar mitzvah's. This, however is the bands only lapse as songs like 'Realies' and 'In God We Rust' and 'S-n-k' are just waiting to be heard and embraced by the masses, and I feel its only a matter of time before this band break through and begin to develop their own style..
