Ministry - Animositisomina

To anyone whose been listening to heavy music for at least the past decade, Ministry is a name that should bring up mixed reactions. On the one hand there is "A Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste" and "Psalm 69", both of which were genre defining industrial-metal masterpieces. On the other hand there is "Filth Pig" and "The Dark Side Of The Spoon", two releases that left audiences wondering if Jourgensen and co. had been cooking up their junk with plastic cutlery.

Thankfully "Animositisomina" is a return to the bands late 80's heydays where anemic drum machines, rolling distorted riffs and abrasive vocals led the way. Aggressive, hungry and almost always firing on all cylinders, this effort finds the band reinvigorated and ready for war. Sure age may have taken its toll as they now seem far more restrained when dishing out their slabs of caustic, industrial laced paranoia, but they compensate this by focusing on droning build-up's which feel more fittingly paced.

In truth this album doesn't include any of the instantly memorable tracks that "Psalm 69" and "A Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste" did, plus the production is also shockingly bare bones with each instrument feeling overly metallic and paper thin; But when compared to the last two outings Ministry put out this is still a godsend for longtime fans of the group. Perhaps the stagnancy and pressure of being on a major label for so long began to bear down on them and make them complacent or perhaps the band now signing with a smaller more artist friendly label in the form of Sanctuary helped them remember why they started making music in the first place; Hell maybe it was even the current shitty state of world affairs that reminded them of a "New World Order", but for whatever the reasoning for a more aggressive turn may have been, its nice to see these legends back on the right course. Sure it may not be their best album, but its definitely a darker record that shows these Texas natives still have enough piss in their tanks to keep their leagues of imitators wet behind the ears for years to come.
