Mindless Self Indulgence - Despierta Los Ninos

Mindless Self Indulgence, love 'em or hate 'em, it's hard to deny that they are one of the rare few groups who provoke an instant reaction. With their music being as in your face as their antics and image though, many have been quick to write them off as a mere gimmick band; while others have wholeheartedly embraced them and stood fiercely loyal by their side. However, whatever ones stance may be on them, there is one thing Mindless Self Indulgence related that can be universally agreed upon - waiting four years for a new full-length album from a band is nothing short of torturous.

While 2002's live offering, "Alienating Our Audience", did manage to slightly whet the appetite for a new outing from the band, it also increased the urge for one all the more. Now, a year later the group are once again issuing another EP, this one being a limited edition release that was only available for purchase on their most recent North American tour. Clocking in with 5 new studio recorded songs, (the live version of "Molly" being the same as the one included on "Alienating Our Audience") the outing treads along the time-tested MSI guidelines one has come to expect from the band, yet in the face of a years expectations, it is also sadly a bit of a mixed bag.

On one hand, tracks like "Brooklyn Hype (Part One)" are undeniably catchy and instant classics in the bands catalog. On the other hand though, tracks like "Alienating Our Audience" and "Joke", while solid offerings, somewhat pale in comparison. Perhaps it's the long waits and subsequent anticipation between new material from the band that causes some disappointment, or perhaps it's just that some of the tracks weren't firing on all cylinders. Whatever the case may be, there's still no question that "Despierta Los Ninos" is trademark Mindless Self Indulgence" and a release any devout fan of the band will want to have in their collection; even if it isn't their most impressive work to date overall.
