PRP: How was Rumble formed?
Roger: GB (bass player) and a different guitar player & drummer were playing out as a 3 piece at a club and I was there and saw them and hooked up. Went to the jam room the next day. (all hungover!)
PRP: Cool. Can you name all members, and tell us what do they do in the band?
Roger: Gutterboy - bass/back up vox, Skunk - guitar/back up vox, Malcolm - drums, and myself, D2e - rants, raves & promo!
PRP: Why DEE?
Roger: My middle name is Dee, & over the years people were calling me "D Double" or "D Double E" so I went with it.
PRP: I see. Hmmmm, you guys have 3 albums and a home video, ain't I right? Tell us more about them.
Roger: No home video. I wish we did though! But yeah, a 5 song EP from '95, a full length from '97 (Mutate) & the new one from '99 (Liquor Store...)
PRP: Hmmm, no home video, but a single then?
Roger: Ahh, yeah. Actually, 3 singles: 1 from '93 - just 1 sing for local radio - 1 from '95 from an Aerosmith tribute cd we were picked for, and 1 from '98 as something to have in between albums. That one has a couple remixes & a cover tune that was unreleased.
PRP: Interesting. Actually, that's a lot of releases for an unsigned band. You all have been playing together for how long?
Roger: Since '93, but with a different guitar player until '96, and 4 different drummers! Those Bastards!
PRP: Hahahaha. Drummers are really a pain in the ass to find.
Roger: Yeah, but even more of a pain when you find 'em! HA!
PRP: Hahaha. The drummer who's in the band today has been in the band for how long?
Roger: Malcolm's been in the fold for about a year and 1/2.
PRP: Cool. Why you decided to sing, and not playing any instruments?
Roger: I played drums (or tried to) when I was 7, but never got into it. Then when I was like 14/15, I got obsessed with music and knew I needed to be the center of attention and focal point or I wouldn't be satisfied. Plus I loved Van Halen & wanted to be Roth. (until I heard his personality!)
PRP: Well, and how you got into rap / hip-hop music at all?
Roger: I used to break dance when I was 13/14 in local "crews" (white guys who were not good) & listened to Grandmaster Flash everyday for like 2 years! Then I kind of lost interest during the "family oriented rap" phase of like goofy stuff like Will Smith. But when Gangsta Rap came out in the late 80's I loved it. NWA!
PRP: Hehehe, Ice-T and Dr. Dre.
Roger: Yeah! "You wanna be a high rolla!"
PRP: Hehehe. Hmmmmmm, which would be your vocal influences?
Roger: My favorite singers are Steven Tyler, Paul Stanley & David Lee Roth, and Rappers are Eazy-E (R.I.P.), Ice Cube, & Grandmaster Flash & the Furious 5.
PRP: Really good mixture there. You think that Aerosmith, Kiss and Van Halen are influences to Rumble's sound?
Roger: Absolutely. Well, vocally they are, anyway. None of the other guys like Kiss though.
PRP: Hmmm, tell me Rumble's influences then....
Roger: All different, I guess: Bass - Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden & Blues/Funk stuff, like Hendrix. Guitar: Van Halen, Steve Vai and NIN / Alternative stuff. Drums: Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, etc.
PRP: Describe Rumble's sound.
Roger: Groove oriented, heavy, melodic with rapping, singing, & yelling all in the same song.
PRP: Cool. How you found that name, RUMBLE, for the band?
Roger: Oh, Jesus! This is cheesey: We had a gig in 3 weeks & the club needed to know the name. We had none. So my guitar player walks into practice on a Tuesday & we're talking about the weekend & I go: "Did you see Pat's new band saturday nite?", and he goes: "Yeah, they're called RUMBLE", and I go, "No, they're called BROM BONE" and he goes: "Oh, I just heard the dude who introduced them yell 'Please welcome BROM BONE' or whatever'". So I go: "Well let's use RUMBLE for us!" It was more out of needing a name fast!
PRP: I see. Who's Pat?
Roger: He is now a crack head who hasn't done anything musically productive since '94.
PRP: Ok, here's a question I always do to bands, and they think it's a hard one, so I like it a lot. Best unsigned band out there, in your opinion?
Roger: Ahhh, I like a lot of independents. Eastcide from MA and Gargantua Soul from CT are a couple of them. Some of the signed shit is cool like Puya & Machine Head. Still pretty much underground.
PRP: Hmmm, any big plans for the future?
Roger: Well, we're currently playing in 8 states here in the U.S., and selling a lot of CD's through internet marketing and at shows. Just trying to build and build, so we can get a good deal from a label once we've proven the market is there. I have some connections and favors I'm gonna be calling on in the next 6 months, so we'll see.
PRP: Cool. Which bands would you like to tour with?
Roger: Kid Rock, Ozzy, and Limp Bizkit, or Godsmack, who are friends of ours that we did a bunch of shows with last year...
PRP: Well, Roger, I think that's it. Anything you wanna add? Sell your fish now, hehehe.
Roger: Cool, man! Thanks a lot, brother - remember to check the website at www.rumble4.com for tour dates, merchandise and MP3's. E-mail: Rumblemail@aol.com.
PRP: Cool. Thanks for taking your time to do this.
Roger: Thank you, my man! I'll catch you later! See you in the Palace!
