Introduction:
System Of A Down started the year off relatively modest after spending some time on a few high profile tours and being sucked into the controversy of a Limp Bizkit feud in late '99, they entered 2000 releasing a video for their track "Spiders", a song which also showed up on the "Scream 3" Soundtrack, which saw a release in January. Keeping busy on the road as well, they were also a part of the Sno-Core tour alongside Mr. Bungle, Incubus and Puya, which kept them occupied straight through the early months of the year. But by the time February rolled around, the band received the great news that their self titled debut, had been certified gold for sales in excess of 500,000 in America, firmly solidifying their place as one of new metals heavy hitters. Continuing on with their hectic schedule, band frontman Serj Tankian found the time to record a guest appearance on (hed)p.e.'s album "Broke", while the band themselves also showed up on Late Night With Conan O'Brien, performing "Spiders" live in March. April then found the bands track "Storaged" make its way onto the "Heavy Metal 2000" Soundtrack, as they began to take some downtime and get to work on writing their next album. However, this process was soon put on the back burner, as opportunity came knocking and the group landed a slot on the Summer Sanitarium tour which would take place in June and also had Metallica, Korn, Kid Rock and Powerman 5000 on the bill. But even though fans were eagerly awaiting a new effort, the band didn't disappoint, as their material showed up on a variety of releases throughout the spring and summer, including the MTV backed "Return Of The Rock" compilation and the "Nativity In Black 2" Black Sabbath tribute album, not too mention taping another live TV performance for Farmclub.com. But as the summer came to a close and they began to recover from their high exposure touring stint and finally seriously got down to work on their new album, this L.A. based quartet, could still not be kept out of stores as members of the band showed up on various releases including "Loud Rocks", "Strait Up", "Iommi", "Blair Witch 2 - Book Of Shadows" and "Dracula 2000". It seems as though they couldn't be kept at work either as they also interrupted their writing process to appear on Cypress Hill's infamous "Smokeout" festival and also threw a benefit for the Awareness of the Armenian Genocide in the later months of the year. Going on to spend most of December and January locked away in the studio writing new material, they are now set to begin recording in February with producer Rick Rubin (Slayer, Rage Against The Machine) and with the success they've already tasted and a summer release for the new effort being eyed, you can bet that they will continue on with the same system to become one of the big breakout bands of 2001. - wookubus
