Introduction:
2000 was a year that many will remember for various reasons, but like it or not, it was also the year that marked the triumphant return to the throne of none other than the kings of metal themselves, Pantera. March saw the release of their first studio album since 1996, with "Reinventing The Steel", an effort that squashed all worries on how the band would be able to survive in a world dominated by the ever popular "new metal". Debuting at #4 on the Billboard charts, it went on to prove just how popular the band is and left fans worldwide salivating for the Texas bred four piece to hit the road. Luckily for them, it was mere weeks later when the group began their assault with a video for the first single from the album, "Revolution Is My Name" hitting video outlets just in time to coincide with a month long tour of Europe alongside Powerman 5000 and Satyricon. After returning home for a short break to continue press for their latest effort, they received great news in May when the album was officially certified gold by the R.I.A.A. for sales in excess of 500,000 in America. Despite the commercial success though, the band had no intentions of slowing down and proceeded to set their sights North America when it was announced shortly after that they would be co-headlining the Ozzfest 2000 tour all summer long. This stint led them to the fall where they then set plans to launch their own headlining tour with Ozzfest running buddies Kittie and metal icons Morbid Angel also on the bill. Unfortunately though, this tour was called off before it even began, when band frontman Phil Anselmo, hurt himself in an accident in which he broke a few ribs, an injury which forced the group to cancel the tour altogether. Yet despite the obvious disappointment, this wasn't too hard of a pill for fans to swallow as the band remained fairly active throughout the year despite their downtime, having new tracks show up on the "Heavy Metal 2000" Soundtrack, The "Nativity In Black II" Black Sabbath tribute and the "Dracula 2000" Soundtrack, not too mention Phil also showing up on the first ever solo album from Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi. But as the curtains drew on 2000 and they found themselves with another successful year behind them, the steel mill already began to kick back into gear as plans have been laid to have the band to hit the road again in February to make up for their canceled tour, this time with Soulfly and Morbid Angel in tow and although the details for their plans after that are still sketchy, you can expect these metal luminaries to keep grindin' that axe for a long time to come yet. - wookubus
