Slayer Bench Drummer Dave Lombardo Amid His Concerns Of The Bands Accounting
Drummer Dave Lombardo has been replaced in Slayer for the time being—a decision apparently made by the band members after he began to question some of their financial practices. A statement posted by Lombardo on the matter can be read below:
“I want to personally apologize to all of our fans in Australia who have bought tickets for the tour expecting to see me in my usual place on the drums.
So that you all know the truth, as of the end of the business day on February 14th, I was notified that I would not be drumming for the tour in Australia. I’m saddened, and to be honest I am shocked by the situation.
Last year, I discovered 90% of Slayer’s tour income was being deducted as expenses including the professional fees paid to management, costing the band millions of dollars and leaving 10% or less to split amongst the four of us. In my opinion, this is not the way a band’s business should operate. I tried rectifying it by letting my band mates know, and Tom and I hired auditors to figure out what happened, but I was denied access to detailed information and the necessary back up documents.
I spent the Christmas and New Year holidays realizing I had toured all over the world in 2012, but yet, had not been paid (except a small advance) or provided a proper accounting for a full year’s sweat and blood. On top of this, I was told that I would not be paid until I signed a long form contract which gave me no written assurance of how much or on what basis management would deduct commissions, nor did it provide me access to the financial budgets or records for review. It also forbade me to do interviews or make statements having to do with the band, in effect a gagging order.
Last Monday, I sat down with Kerry and Tom to rehearse for Australia and to propose a new business model that I felt was the best way forward for Slayer to confidently protect itself so we could do what we do best . . . play for the fans. Kerry made it clear he wasn’t interested in making changes and said if I wanted to argue the point, he would find another drummer. On Thursday, I arrived at rehearsals at 1 pm as scheduled, but Kerry did not show. Rather, at 6:24 pm I received an email from the lawyers saying I was being replaced for the Australian dates.
I remain hopeful that we can resolve our issues. But once again, I sincerely apologize to all of our fans in Australia who spent their money expecting to see the 3 of us original Slayer members.
I look forward to seeing you in the future.
Sincerely,
Dave Lombardo“
The group look to have tapped former drummer Jon Dette as a temporary fill-in during their Australian tour. Dette will be pulling double duty as he is also down under filling in for Anthrax‘s Charlie Benante.

Total bullshit.
This is fucking sad. I definitely see Dave’s side of the story and hope that things can be resolved asap.
King got that Jager $$$$ i guess he doesn’t need the 10% Slayer cash
What the fuck is this?!? I’d expect this from Durst and Borland, but not the mighty Slayer.
Damn! I like Slayer and all but Kerry sounds like a fuckin’ loser right now. I would never shade out a band member for a few extra bucks. So now they’re probably getting a drummer who doesn’t expect much anyways and they could tell what to do?! Idk.. fuck this noise!! — Oh yeah and if my guitar player said “Nah, we ain’t interested in changes.” Then management emails me cause they are too pussy to say anything in person I’d have to deck someone in the face. //End rant
90% goes missing to ‘The Man’ and no pay for 12 months? Fuck that! Good on ya Dave! Hope you’re able to get it all sorted.
SLAYER are SLAYER. As a fan this shit is just part of the cycle. Dave’s left, I think Dette came in then got asked to leave, Dave came back, Kerry and Dave got at each others throats, Dave took off, Bostaph came in, then Bostaph took off, Dave came back, Jeff’s arm about rotted off, they got the dude from Exodus to cover, now Dave and Kerry are disagreeing again. That may be a bit out of order but sooner or later they get back to being a band.
At least they aren’t bringing in a bat-shit therapist and working their problems out in front of a camera.
Well, at least Metallica, for all of their swollen egos, recognized that they were a completely dysfunctional unit. I don’t think there’s anything worth praising about the way Slayer functions.
I agree with you on not praising Slayer’s current dysfunction but don’t agree with Metallica’s “lets get a therapist and not act like grown-ups.” If you want to get your ass in gear, you put on your grown up pants and act like a man. Work your shit out in your band (which I realize Slayer is not doing) and figure it out. If you need “emotional healing” or some horse-shit then play your instrument. That’s what the music is for; an emotional outlet. Doubt will see eye to eye on this so here’s boobs ( . )( . ) and a “roll as you wish.”
So wearesortal38…in lieu of today’s news of Adam Duce leaving Machine Head after years of issues with Robb, you still think making music WITH THE CONFLICT is a good enough solution? I sincerely don’t know how Metallica can catch crap for Some Kind Of Monster. Sure, it made them look weak…but they were weak, anymore than Slayer is now. They’re no different than any other human beings on this planet. Metallica were the grown-ups in the situation and sought out external resources to help resolve their conflicts. Unfortunately for the rest of us, I think Slayer are “too metal” to consider such a thing and considering King’s comments about how no songs have been written yet, I don’t think it’s far-fetched to believe World Painted Blood was the last we heard from them. But yes, stay “metal”.
wearesorta138 is on the forefront of the mental illness issue in the US. If everybody would listen to him and play instruments we wouldn’t have to worry about school shootings.
“When I say I will fade like a sigh if I stay, you minimize my movement anyway. Why must I show you another way?”
Kerry King is a fag and Slayer fucking sucks.
Methinks there’s a Kerry Kickback if he’s not worried about restructuring their deal to benefit all members. I found it interesting that he provided some numbers, do we know what the deal was with Ward/Sabbath? I thought I saw Geezer say it was 25% for each of them.
When he left before Slayer wasn’t the same, I hope the band can resolve there issues and not go in the direction they have before. It seems like Dave is trying to be smart are work without the labels. Kerry on the other hand seems to like the management’s table scarp hand outs. they are a huge band they I’m sure they have more then enough money to fund , headline there own tours and take in 100% of the profit.
Take in 100% of the profit? I don’t even know where to begin with this one…
Just let it go man, LET IT GO.
I did mean after paying for the costs of running the tour of course. They would be able to split 100% of the left overs. You would of been better off picking at my grammar as I was high as fuck when I wrote that comment.
“after paying for the costs of running the tour of course. They would be able to split 100% of the leftovers.” Yeah dude, revenue minus costs is the definition of profit, of which they already split 100% of. Dave’s problem is that 100% of their profit is only 10% of total revenue.
Dude, you need to read your posts before pressing the post button, and not just for the reason these guys are ripping on your for.
This just goes to show that everyone is replaceable when it comes to the almighty dollar. King hiding behind lawyer’s emails does not surprise me. The guy is a fucking tool. Lombardo should go all Big Worm on these assholes. Playin’ with my money is like playin’ with my emotions…..
Slayer’s done. This is the final nail in the coffin. Hanneman’s not coming back to this Kerry King shitshow.
Slayers done? This fucking guy.
the music industry is shitting on the music it’s trying to sell. The entire industry needs to disappear, and artists need to embrace a new era of free media.
