High On Fire’s Matt Pike Says Aerosmith’s Career Is “A Hot, Heaping Pile Of Dog Shit”
High On Fire vocalist/guitarist really doesn’t like Aerosmith. In a new feature over at AVClub.com, he expressed his hatred for the band and their song “Dude (Looks Like A Lady)” in particular. Some choice quotes from that include:
“I’ve just always had this thing with Aerosmith. The guy sounds like a goat. [Bleating.] “Baaa, baaa, dude looks…” It just gets under my skin. I have this button called the off button or the mute button that I call the Aerosmith button on all my stereos.
I just have this weird thing with Aerosmith, where I don’t even care what people say about their old shit. I think they’re the crappiest, most overrated shit band of all time. And I fucking can’t stand them. [Laughs.] And that particular song gets under my skin to where I want to stab people.”
“That band hasn’t done anything since the ’70s. And in the ’70s, which was their most redeeming era, they still fucking sucked. Two good tracks that just won everybody over, and the rest of their career has been a hot, heaping pile of dog shit. I’m just not into Aerosmith, I suppose.”
Be sure to read the full feature for a deeper look into his hatred for the band.

COMMENTS
Aerosmith is easily one of the most overrated bands in Rock n’ Roll, totally agree with this man.
I’ve always thought Aerosmith was overrated. Whenever some magazine or website does a top 100 list or whatever, I always laugh a bit if I see Aerosmith, Steven Tyler or Joe Perry ranked near the top.
I can’t say “they’re the crappiest, most overrated shit band of all time” though. That’s a bit of an exaggeration. Like the HOF dude said, their early stuff was cool and I think some of their 90′s era shit was alright too. I can think of quite a few worse bands. That being said, 9 times out of 10 the station gets changed when they come on.
I never said their music was shit, but it’s just that they get to much credit for doing generic rock, people hold these classic rock bands with too high a standard, honestly I was never a fan of GNR, Bon Jovi, Aroesmith, instead during middle school my guitar teacher got me into The Velvet Underground, Lou Reed, Mahavishnu Orchestar and some classic jazz, 70′s American rock was overrated all together, B.B. King was doing some of his best shit in the 70′s but surprise! nobody cared. Honestly I’m one of those kids who are happy to raised in this generation.
Mahavishnu? Fuckin A, St. Anger…. I like you a lot more now. I just listened to them today!
Yeah I know you didn’t say their music was shit but Pike did and you “totally agreed” with him. I mostly agree as well, I just think the way he worded his opinion was a bit harsh when there are so many shittier bands to discuss.
I would also recommend exploring a bit more of 70′s rock–even the American variety. There is some overrated stuff but some of the best rock music ever came from that decade as well. Like all eras and genres, it takes a bit of work to sort through the shit to find the gold.
Matt Pike speaks the truth, Aerosmith fucking sucks. I’ll admit a couple of their songs are decent but they’re just shitty, greedy assholes.
Yeah High on Fire’s career is easily comparable to Aerosmith’s…..
Lol and he was comparing his band in what part? So, dudes in bands can’t have personal opinions of bands that are different than their own? Hmmm…
Uhhh….nice try. He didn’t say simply: “Aerosmith’s not my thing.” He trashed their legacy and their career. Even if you don’t like them (which is fine…and I really don’t overall) you HAVE to acknowledge their career and legacy. If you don’t your rock and roll naviete is exposed. So my response is simple: What the fuck has High on Fire ever done? In fact, I’ve never even heard of them until the other day.
He DID simply say that Aerosmith was not his thing. In a lot more colorful of a way. Don’t project more onto it than what was said dude. He continually made statements that were clearly his PERSONAL OPINION. He never said anything about High On Fire nor comparing himself or his band to Aerosmith. Last time I checked, this is Amuricka. We can say what we think. So…why do you give a shit that some guy in some band you have never heard of personally hates the shit out of Aerosmith anyway? If you don’t like it, you can get eeooout.
He also doesn’t have to admit anything about their legacy. It doesn’t sound to me like they were discussing that at all. It was just about his enjoyment, or lack thereof. I would also say their legacy is debatable. Sure they’ve been around for a really long time but one could argue that they aren’t anywhere near as important a band as say The Beatles or Led Zeppelin. Two bands I personally can’t stand. But respect the hell out of. Aerosmith though….meh.
Simply put: He’s a nobody pissing on a legend. He’s probably doing it for attention but who the hell is he to make that statement against A FAR more experienced and successful band? If Paul McCartney came out and said this tomorrow you could at least take it seriously (even if you don’t agree); but coming from this clown/attention whore/total nobody it’s just laughable.
@massdeath, get over it. Who seriously cares if he trashes ever legitimate band we could all name? It hardly matters. It was entertaining to read and whether anyone agrees or not is besides the point.
Dude (Is Just Trying To Get Attention)
Dude (You’re A Moron)
Dude (Looks like a lady)
dontdoghb just won this entire thread.
Oh, I just read the whole post. I still laughed.
OM>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>HOF.
The best part about Aerosmith was Alicia Silverstone almost showing her tits in that one music video. That was the catalyst for many of my adolescent boners.
Ahh the days before the internet exploded were dark times indeed.
Alicia Silverstone was boner jams 95 for me. The first time I set eyes on Alicia Silverstone, I just got that old fashioned romantic feeling where I’d do anything to bone her.
High on Fire will never make the money Aerosmith has. In the words of Floyd “Money” Mayweather “step your game up”. High on fire wont be remembered 40 years after their career. Aerosmith is. I like how these little monkeys in these gay fucking bands that tour around in bull shit little vans run their mouths. Has high on fire won a grammy? Have they sold out venues like Madison Square Garden or Wembley Stadium? Are they Platinum recording artist? Money talks and bullshit walks, When this cat is in his 40′s he is going to be broke and flipping burgers. If your not rolling the same bank roll as a giant keep your mouth shut. The world is decided by the people with cash flow not some scrub opinionated punk who has to split the rent on a house with all of his band members.
Oh and so everyone knows I am not even an Aerosmith fan…this is just principal.
perhaps your bankroll agrument would be better suited for billboard.com. none of these bands have stacks of cash (with respect to Aerosmith’s pile). if that is your agrument for “talking back” then why do you listen to outsider music? how would any of the stupid things said on this page by bands have any merit if cash is your green card into the discussion?
“outsider” music is a vague term on this site, but I won’t argue that one here.
Although I agree that Aerosmith is pretty overrated, the argument about “people with the cash flow” making the decision is irrelevant. The most progressive art in the world can never be part of the mainstream, and won’t ever make much money. Money isn’t a good gauge on how much a musician has achieved in his/her career. There are countless “artists” that produce pure shitpoop and people just throw money at them….. That said, I think High on Fire is cool but I don’t know why people get so excited about them either. Ain’t nothing mind blowing.
Kesha makes terrible terrible music. I’m sure I have no right to express that because I don’t pull in however much Kesha is overpaid
Grammys are about talent. Totally not about political glad-handing or anything like that. Yeah, totally about talent. Yeah.
The point I was trying to make is that this guy has no right to take a pot shot at a band like Aerosmith. His band will never and I do mean NEVER accomplish what Aerosmith has. As far as some of the comments made in response to my statement. Yes money and performing at sold out shows at some of the most prestigious venues in the world is a great way to measure the greatness of any musician. This guy from High on fire did not get into music or pick up a guitar because he had some need inside of him. He did it for the same reason all of them do it. The Money and The Women. You can argue it until your blue in the face but that is the truth. If I was wrong we wouldnt see these people cry on forums about how they are getting screwed by people downloading music. They would just be happy their art is being widely accepted by other people who enjoy what they have created.
Do I think Aerosmith is overrated?…I dont know maybe they are maybe they are not. I don’t have a problem with ANYONE making that statement. To say that their career is a heaping pile of dog shit, I mean come on if their career and music is heaping pile of dog shit then what does that make High on fire’s career?
You obviously are in the wrong place if you believe money, groupies, Grammy awards, or any other popularity characteristic determines how great of a musician you are.
Also, if you actually read the article, he didn’t make a “pot shot.” He was interviewed by some website in a segment of theirs where they seek out musicians to ask what bands/songs they dislike. It’s not like Matt Pike went out of his way to shit on Aerosmith. He was asked to shit on someone and it happened to be Aerosmith.
So he was asked and the band that came to mind is Aerosmith. Not Toto or Styxx. Shit he couldnt even throw out bon jovi. He called Aerosmith’s Career a heaping pile of dog shit. I am pretty sure that counts as a pot shot. Like I said its not the overrated comment that bugs me. It was the fact that some ugly gaped tooth lame is some stupid band that won’t stand the test of time is calling out a band that is hailed by many as one of the greats. Not saying I agree that they are, but what they have done can not be denied. They set up a tour and the whole thing sales out within hours. Every date and every venue. Its always the broke musicians that are on the other end of comments like that. Well with the exception that goof ball from Disturbed that makes the monkey noises. You never hear the guys who succeeded talking shit on other bands.
You may have a point about the grammy awards and money thing. There are alot of great musicians who dont get paid like Zack Andrews or Ewan Dobson. You just dont hear guys like that run off at the mouth.
0 dates of Aerosmith’s last tour sold out.
oh snap ^^^
money, heh
Pike is the man but I must disagree with him on this one. Love In An Elevator is one of the greatest songs of all time. The video rules, the main riff rules, and “I’ll chase you all the way to the stairway, honey and kiss your sassafras” is one of the best lines in the history of rock.
Shittt, even that white boy Dufay got stacks upon stacks now. Just for playing 3-4 years with them in the 80′s. That shit cray.
Aerosmith has some very good songs but a lot of complete crap.
In the 70′s when Aerosmith first came along they were lambasted by critics as a shitty Rolling Stones knock off which they more or less are. 40 years later the same magazines call them legends.
Aerosmith is also boring as fuck live.
agree with Pike
Not only does it make me happy to hear dudes like Matt Pike, Guy Kozowyk, Chino Moreno and Greg Puciato shoot their mouths off about shit they think sucks, but it also warms my heart to see thePRP erupt with resounding anti-Aerosmith sentiment.
I was going to write something in response to that…its not worth it, You put Chino in the sentence as Matt pike. You my friend are a fucking idiot.
“You put Chino in the sentence as Matt pike. You my friend are a fucking idiot.”
ironic
jk51084 what are you a pussy? Aerosmith is gay end of story. Punk.
Why do I get the feeling your some pussy Britt.
I was reciting the same words you said about Jimmy eat world…
My experiences with Aerosmith shows are:
1. $50 t-shirts
2. Cell phone belt holders everywhere
3. Opening band puts on better show than Aerosmith
4. Band plays new crap no one paid over inflated ticket price to hear
5. Steven and Joe need to get it over with and fuck each other on stage while the rest of the band goes through the emotions
KISS blew them off the stage that night. Vince Neil sounded better than Steven Tyler the next time if that puts it in perspective.
1. Yes, which is why you buy a $10 knock-off in the parking lot that usually includes all bands (do this for all festivals too)
2. Applies to all classic rock concerts
3. I’ve seen them with Johnny Lang and Cheap Trick, so this has not been true in my case
4. There was too much of this
5. They all seemed to be having a good time when I saw them a few months ago
Vince Neil sounded horrible with MC when I saw them on Crue Fest 2, one of 2 bands I haven’t stayed to see the encore.
I only get the knock offs for mayhem or uproar or summer slaughter for the sole reason in that it has all the bands of it
I’m just glad to see sobriety hasn’t made Matt Pike into a pussy.
good to hear someone else actually can’t stand Aerosmith. Now where are my anti-Led Zeppelin friends? and you know who else is stupid? the rolling stones!
I love Zeppelin (though they were admittedly a rather sloppy band, and thieves at that), but I could never dig the Stones.
I also don’t like Matt Pike. I saw High on Fire live once and found them incredibly boring. Tried listening to a Sleep album (Dopesmoker) and found the band’s name to perfectly describe the effect their music had on me.
