Mike Patton On Faith No More Reunion: “It’s Sort Of Petered Out”

Mike Patton was the subject of a revealing interview with Believermag.com. The Q&A saw Patton detail his musical process, how he approaches different projects and much more. Among the questions asked was the current status of Faith No More‘s reunion, to which he replied:

“It’s sort of petered out. We’re also maybe a little too conscious for our own good. Meaning there’s a lineage of bands that maybe did some nice things and then needed the cash and got back together and basically just sprayed diarrhea over their entire body of work. We’re very worried about that. We don’t want to overdo it.”

Call me a cynic, but this sort of thing reads as “We made our money, see ya later suckers.” Not one single new note of music isn’t much of a reunion in my book. That goes for you too, RATM.

I could care less if I’m the only person in it’s corner, but Peeping Tom is the shit. If that’s a “shit” release, I hope the man keeps getting diarrhea.

Peeping Tom is awesome! I’ve seen them a few times and it is great live. I heard that the second Peeping Tom has been done for some time now…

Jealous of you seeing them live. I’ve seen Mr. Bungle back in the day, but that was about it. Can’t imagine the kinda show PT would be.

As far as a second record, I’m sold if it appears.

I saw Peeping Tom live: one hell of a crazy party. I don’t remember much, heh.

Some new FNM would be nice. I think it will happen sooner or later. They’re taking their time, that’s cool.

In the meantime new Tomahawk record soon! Woo-hoo! Patton hasn’t put out a rock record in too long.

And hopefully at some point in time…drumroll…Mr Bungle reunion!

I’m a massive Patton fan, and this man almost has a flawless track record when it comes to releases.

I could understand someone saying maybe General Patton Vs the executioners wasn’t the best (Still has some brilliant tracks), but it’s hard to find much else wrong with his work.

Fuck, I even own his solo albums, and those are fucked.

Coming from a guy who made almost an entire album out of fart noises on a tape recorder (see: Adult Themes for Voice), I find this excuse somewhat disappointing.

Fantomas – Delìrium Còrdia was the only album I’ve ever returned based on the fact that it was shit. I didn’t even give the guy at Tower a chance to debate with me. I told him there was no music on the cd and that I wanted my money back. Other than that, Patton is still a God in my book.

Always thought it was crazy as fuck, and my friend’s wife had a seizure to that record.
I really dig Lovage and Peeping Tom, too.

The only part I liked was when he was making the music with his mouth. I bought Peeping Tom. The record was okay, I really liked Mojo. The project I really dig is Tomahawk. Fantastic rock music.

I first heard them on the Henry Rollins show (look up his letter to Toby Keith for shits n grins). “We’re Not Alone” is my fav after “Neighborhood Spaceman.”
I’ll have to get reacquainted with Tomahawk.
Have any of you seen that bad acid trip of a DVD Director’s Cut Live?

Delium Cordia was totally shitty! I saw them at the Fillmore in SF on that tour and it was still OK but not great. I also saw Fantomas play Director’s Cut on NYE in SF which came out on that tripped out DVD and that show was amazing!

Interesting comment since I really enjoy Delirium Cordia and it is my favorite Fantomas cd, but I can understand how it may have been boring for you. Maybe if you give it another shot you may find the same enjoyment I get from it. Obviously you are a solid fan so I will take your word on you not digging it. I like the Tower comment, never argue with us

I don’t necessarily believe that this is a lie, but I would not put it past Patton to say this and then release a double album of new FNM material in the fall, cause that is just how he is. He does whatever the hell he wants and he does not worry about answering to anyone for it. (sometimes that equals CD’s of fart noises, other times it equals pure awesomeness… what are you gonna do? Gotta love him.)

Honestly I don’t want artists making a new album after ten years then being disappointed that it’s sub par to their other releases. For example, imagine that Metallica released Death Magnetic right after “…And Justice” except a 10 year gap.

    • Patton, here’s how you have a reunion tour and NOT spray diarrhea all over your legacy. First, play nothing but your own songs, not these obscure European themes and shit I’ve seen videos of. People waited a long time and probably spent some decent buck to see you guys; they came for “Faith No More” not “Faith No More does Euro covers and obscure shit.” Most importantly, you owe it to all your fans to play more than 8 shows in the US/Canada and not focus strictly on Europe. That’s bullshit. If you wanna pull that Biohazard shit on us then expect people to get pissy. You are, in fact, the ones spraying diarrhea all over your legacy.

      • Love Patton and Faith No More, but I completely agree. Those covers were straight hit the bathroom or go grab a beer songs. Unfortunately these guys are more popular outside of the US so I kind of understand the abundance of overseas dates. That said there are enough US fans to pack decent size clubs throughout the states.

    • Also, I fucking love Faith No More so that’s why I’m ripping on them. But is anyone else sick of interviews with Patton where he just gives off this vibe like he’s the most brilliant musician to ever walk the Earth? It’s the equivalent to hearing an interview with Johnny Depp. Both of these dudes reek of arrogance and have become so full of themselves they act like they shit out bars of gold. If they do shit out bars of gold I will retract my statements.

I know what you mean. I love him and his work, but he seems pretentious. Same with Omar Rodriguez-Lopez from At the Drive-In / The Mars Volta.

How bout the fact that he used to get totally pissy when people would mosh at ATDI shows? That’s fairly pretentious, who are you to tell anyone else how to have a good time while paying to watch you play? Even if it is annoying and poorly conceived, you can either bitch about it or be glad there’s enough people AT your shows to mosh at all.

Getting pissy over fans moshing at your shows is stupid but that doesn’t exactly fit the definition of pretentious. A good example of someone being pretentious would be like that one recent headline where that one guy from that band no one gives a fuck about tweeted about writing a song inspired by his hate for some other guy in a band no one gives a fuck about.

As far as Patton and Depp being arrogant, I guess I agree, though with resumes like theirs I think they’ve earned that right to some extent. I’d rather see a couple of talented artists act arrogantly than 99% of the frontboys in these shitty scene bands who haven’t accomplished shit other than releasing generic music and running through a few dozen scene sluts.

I will say again that Patton and Omar SEEM pretentious; I use the word “seem” instead of “are” because I have never met them and do not know what they are really like besides seeing/hearing interview videos, reading interviews, etc. I recall Omar seeming pretentious regarding the ATDI reunion as he pretty much said in an interview regarding it that they were doing it for the money. Also the fact that Omar (and Cedric) decided they had to break up ATDI in the middle of a fucking tour just because they were so sick of the band and felt they weren’t getting what they wanted out of it creatively; I had to get a refund for the ticket I bought. If they had at least finished the fucking tour I could have seen ATDI one damn time. Maybe I’m just bitter here.. I also am bitter about the lack of U.S. dates for the Faith No More reunion. I feel like Patton’s punishing the U.S. for not supporting the band commercially as much as foreign markets did. Besides hardcore fans, the U.S. kind of disregarded most of FNM’s output after “Epic.” It’s a shame, but dude, get over it, there are plenty of people in the U.S. who would go see you now as they know it may be their only chance to.

        • I remember seeing At the Drive In at The Big Day Out festival circa 2001 after Mudvayne had done their set. ATDI were shit and that’s why they were pelted with anything that people could find on the ground next to them. Good times…

I smell what you’re steppin’ in. I am also a little butt-chapped I hadn’t the chance to catch either.
But!!! At least both Patton and RodLop are churning out multiple music butters EVERY year! YAY!

What tilts my brows are those rapscallions in Refused, touring as a somewhat hipster nostalgic event, offering nothing juicy in the meantime.
But, like Thomas Jefferson always said, “Tough titties, twatcrisp.”

I didn’t feel that Patton seemed pretentious in the interview… he even talked about how he didn’t read music for shit and started out screaming before he learned to sing just like many screamers/yellers/singers…i.e. Baroness. On the lack of U.S. dates: here in the U.S. FNM was playing large theaters, whereas in Europe they were headlining giant festivals and getting paid in Euros which are worth more than dollars. From a business standpoint that seems like a smart move. OF COURSE they got back together for the $ just like ATDI but FNM seemed to actually appreciate and embrace the reunion.

I also figured Omar to be a bit pretentious but actually I got to meet him recently on the first Bosnian Rainbows tour and he was actually pretty cool and seemed kinda humble. I also met Cedric once and he seemed a bit more pretentious than Omar, but was still cool enough to come over and sign a couple autographs. If we are switching to the subject of pretentious rock stars tho, than why has no body brought up Maynard yet? I think he is the model of pretentiousness that sets the bar for others. Pretentious or not, personally I fucking dig all of the above mentioned musicians.

    • I just thought of this…I have never seen an interview where they ask Patton how he feels, many years later, about having (of all bands) Limp Bizkit as their opening band on their last US tour back in ’98. I’d love to hear his talk about this.
