From what I can tell they didn’t go the way of Saturday which I am very thankful for. This sounds awesome. Won’t bump Converge for me, but still seems great.

They have achieved that special very rare distinction being able to do no wrong. I mean the only reason Saturday Night Wrist and their self titled album aren’t praised constantly is because Adrenalin, White Pony, and Diamond Eyes exist. I can’t wait for the new album. It will be on a loop in my ears for at least a week straight I’m sure.

I find myself in agreement with relentless a lot. Minerva is fuckin great, and the self titled is seriously under rated by even the biggest Deftones fans. Those songs are as close to White Pony sounding as it gets(which most people say is best). But when they rank them, they place them pretty far apart. I really like how diverse and aggressive Around the Fur is though. I am always impressed by the next Deftones album, whatever it may be at the time. I also like to see people’s ranking of the albums, but I wish they would explain a little bit why they roll that way. It’s cool to see what different attractions bring us all to the Deftones. Like the fair, everyone has a favorite ride.

        • I’m not saying it’s bad but the self-titled is my least favorite Deftones album. That said, “Needles & Pins” is a great song. That song seemed like a throwback to Adrenaline when it came out.

I enjoy the self titled. Moana, needles and pins, anniversary of an uninteresting event, deathBlow, Battle axe, and deftones heaviest track to date when girls telephone boys make that album for me! I like Minerva but enjoy the live version much better.

      • The self-titled album IS their best album. The reason it gets overlooked it because it WASN’T White Pony. And since I just feel the need to…

        Deftones
        Diamond Eyes
        Saturday Night Wrist
        Adrenaline
        White Pony
        Around the Fur

        • No way Around the Fur is probably my favourite by far, then White Pony, Diamond Eyes, I think Saturday Night Wrist was their weakest, still an awesome album though.

        • I used to not like the self titled all that much, until i started listening to it again lately with fresh ears…and yeah, this cd is amazing. Than again, their whole catalog is great, one of the few bands i listen to that i have everything in one playlist for them and hit shuffle.

I can’t pick to be honest. They are truly one of those bands where whatever album I’m listening to at that time can be favorite. Deftones in both their most conventional sense AND experimental are fantastic. I truly cannot choose a favorite.

        • Here’s what I say, they are all equally amazing on their own and are from a different time in their lives. To me each album is amazing in its own right because it’s a snapshot of what was going on with them as a band at that time. Much love and respect to Deftones, they always bring it and will continue to be the best Goddamn band in the world. Peace.

    • Wasn’t a huge fan of self-titled, but I agree there def were some killer tracks, minerva still rocks! Really liked Saturday, and still play it often. Can’t wait for koi no yokan that’s for sure. This is the only album that may take my number one spot from Converge and Thy Art Is Murder.

Saturday Night Wrist was their most disjointed and dysfunctional effort. You hear the band deteriorating. But damn, I love some of those songs! As a whole album listen, it’s their weakest.

Around the Fur, White Pony, Lovers (what I always call the self titled), and Diamond Eyes are all equals for me. I’m hoping Koi No Yokan fits right in there.

    • Holy shit are you guys really doing the album ranking thing again? Fuck that. I’ll say this though, if you put Adrenaline or ATF at the bottom, you’re doing it wrong.

Early prediction: Gauze will be my favorite track. That riff at the end of the preview intrigues me. I got a bit of a Helmet vibe from it.

        • It’s a fine tradition. But I bet I’ve ranked Deftones albums on here three times in just the past year or two so I’ll opt out of this one. My list hasn’t changed. I’ll jump in the next time, after I’ve digested the new one.

I think one of the many great things about Deftones is every album brings something new to the table while still giving you that Deftones flavor. With that said, the Deftones get better with age. I won’t go as far as saying their newest album will be their very best to date, nor do I believe the best one always has to be the oldest. I personally like them all. If I ever get sick of an album, I just make my own Deftones playlist.

    • I started the Deftone’s album ranking tradition so fuck all you mother truckers.

      1. Around the Fur
      2. White Pony
      3. Diamond Eyes
      4. Adrenaline
      5. Saturday Night Wrist
      6. Deftones

Relentless Beating, Lifeseclipse, Geor! and Damn (your mom’s balls) might just be the dumbest of them all. You all are stupid, blockheaded, boorish, doltish, dull, dumb, fatheaded, ignorant, imbecilic, impassive, lethargic, numbskulled, oafish, obtuse, phlegmatic, simple, slow-witted, sluggish, stolid, torpid. Dumb as Ass.

I think Adrenaline should be left off the lists…

It is special, but it is also hampered by some issues.

1 – Of all the Deftones releases, it is the one most closely associated with Nu-metal.
2 – The production quality is lower than the other releases.
3 – It is the oldest one.

Why does it deserve to be seperate and on it’s own list?

Because we all rocked the shit out of that CD (If you were into music when it came out) If a CD could be worn out, I’d have replaced that motherfucker 10 times. I actually saw them perform it live in a little dive called the Cattle Club in Sacaramento, CA before I ever heard the CD. They left a serious impression (a crater) on me. I have been a fan ever since.

In short, because of reasons 1, 2, and 3 Adrenaline deserves its own list and it should be at the top… The other Deftones albums are all great and can be summed up like so.

      1 – Diamond Eyes
      2 – White Pony
3 – Deftones / Around the Fur (tie)
      4 – Saturday Night Wrist

8 – Covers (I see you all left that one out)

Anyone listen to the preview? I feel like doing so is a dinner spoiler. I want to get the whole product in my hands then in my CD player and absorb it like a sponge!

Was torn myself. Then I just caved in and listened. Duder, thing sounds like each song will have a lot of variation so look at the 30 seconds as an Aperitif rather than dessert.

      • Completely agree with you. I resist the urge to preview (save for the singles) any of their albums before they come out. Probably the only band that I still care to do this with. It was cool for me when Diamond Eyes came out and a bunch of people had downloaded it already and were telling me what it was like. When I finally got it and listened to it for the first time, it was unique cuz I had imagined what some of the songs would sound like based on people’s descriptions and opinions.

    • Ranked and scored out of 100 (100 being an A+ perfect, timeless classic, and 59 being a Failed effort)

      100. Around the Fur – no explanation necessary
      95. White Pony – Balanced, progressive, quintessential
      91. Diamond Eyes – a return to form, personal, raging, a hurricane
      90. Self-Titled – Heavy, grooving, claustrophobic, with a song or two misplaced.
      79. Adrenaline – Amazing debut, doesn’t hold as well over time, production, scope and budget lacking.
      70. Covers – An album for the hardcore fan, littered with b-sides and a DVD. a cash grab nonetheless.
      65. Saturday Night Wrist – splintered, indecisive, in-cohesive, though featuring some promising work. Uncannily, Chi’s accident was almost a necessary omen to right a wayward ship.
??. Eros would have been the breaking point and THE LAST Deftones album.
??. Koi No Yokan – my reservation and subsequent regrading of this list will take place upon satisfactorily absorbing the new album in its entirety.

As an aside – some of my biggest complaints about any album from Deftones have always been the soft ambient Chino-only type tracks. To me they’ve just always felt out of place and disruptive to the album’s overall feel or flow. I have removed these tracks from their order in my iTunes and added them to a playlist for Chino’s other bands Team Sleep and Crosses where they are at once comfortable and familiar.

Hit sharinglungs.com. Under the deftones thread there’s a page for downloads. Someone took the old mix and pushed it through pro-tools or something and made it a bit clearer a couple years prior. I want to say there was talk of really doing a heavy duty clean up (fiddling with the tracks till it sounded as clear as Adrenaline) but I don’t know how far that dude/dudette/hermaphro-duder got. To be honest haven’t hit there in a while, so don’t hold me to it. Worse comes to worse, google “like (linus) blogspot.” Might be a better mix out there nowadays.
