Wes Borland: “Black Light Burns Records Are Selling Like Shit, But Somehow Everyone Seems To Have Heard It”
Wes Borland of Limp Bizkit & Black Light Burns recently shared his thoughts on the current status of the music industry today with Metalshrine. You can read his grim, yet somewhat hopeful, assessment of the current climate below:
“…Here we go! Let’s start the engine. The way things are now, there’s no money in selling records anymore, but making them is very cheap. The scale has tipped. Now anybody can make a record for nothing and they can do it at home and it sounds great. Because of that and the internet we now have this over saturation of music everywhere.
Some of it’s great and there are people that have made records probably for free at home and they would never have been able to put anything out before. You have all this great music, but you also have all this shitty music that people are putting out. Boat anchor music. It’s really hard to find that good music. It’s like a needle in a haystack.
Thank god there’s Spotify and stuff because sometimes those things will send you to other things that are similar to what you’re listening to. You have some sort of navigation through the mess of stuff and I think it’s getting better. The scales have tipped and everyone’s trying figure out how to deal with it after the fact. Things like Spotify are great and they are going to, at some point, start providing income to artists again so they can keep making records, but as of right now it’s impossible for people to sell records, unless you’re a titan like the Lady Gaga’s of the world.
It’s sad because a lot of people aren’t going to be able to afford to make music their lives and make that second follow up or third record. How many more records are we gonna have that make bands into legends? There’s probably a Led Zeppelin out there that just the carpet pulled out from under their feet because they don’t have time or money to go on tour anymore, so all the things they could’ve been in their career are gonna be gone because they have to wash dishes to pay the rent. That’s the biggest loss, people not being able to afford to make music.
We’ll see what happens. Maybe it’ll start happening to where they can afford to just devote their lives to music. Black Light Burns records are selling like shit, but somehow everyone seems to have heard it. I get people saying “Oh, the record’s amazing!” all day long and people who tell me they love the record, but they haven’t bought it. That’s where we are. No one’s buying the records and that’s even worse for other bands.
It’s a scary time, but I have some kinda hope that they were just headed through a valley and there will be a peak, that makes sense for everyone. You can all get music for way less than you would have been paying for it in the past and we can all somehow make money from record sales again.
Not the amount we were making, but enough so people can make a career out of it. That would be great.”

COMMENTS
I’d say that this is complete bullshit. It isn’t hard to find great music; the only thing is that you have to become active as a listener to find it and can’t rely on any “media” to directly shove it down your throat. And that is actually better than before.
right on
I thought you were going to follow the complete bullshit part up with “who the fuck has listened to Black Light Burns?”
That doesn’t really run counter to anything he said. What you’re forgetting is that the vast majority of people are not active as listeners in the least.
Who gives a shit about the average listener? If they aren’t active enough to know what they are listening to is shit and that there are gold mines out there for those that scour the earth for great music, than they dont deserve to listen to it in my opinion, and even if they did its generally not as easy to digest as the spoon-fed music out in the mainstream. However, that does suck for these amazing artists that create the product and want to sell it. It does not bother me in the slightest that the music I want to listen to is not always what is right there in front of me. How awesome is it to just stumble across a band that isnt well known and realize what they are doing in incredible?
G Scotty, except he’s talking about it from a “what it takes for bands to make a living” and, I’m sorry, all your faux hipster, metalhead, “I found it first,” egotist, metal street cred bullshit does not help musicians in the least with that.
1) This is the oldest news ever. Do we really need a statement to realize that “wow technology keeps getting better rendering recording to be easy!” Napster and MySpace have both hurt and helped bands in various ways for the last 15 years roughly.
2) Lies. Everyone has not heard BLB albums. Most don’t even know who they are. Is he saying that to make himself feel better?
He doesnt realize that the people that reach out to him to tell him they love the album are just the people that enjoy the album, and should not be categorized as “everyone”. Most likely he read about 14 comments from fans and he thought, “Oh shit, everyone is loving this!”
The new BLB album is a crushing disappointment. Cruel Melody was great, but the new one is a generic 90s alt.rock throwback full of cliches and bad goth vocals.
Zactly, not even close to CM. You can’t, you can’t, you can’t stop a bullet!
I haven’t heard his record and I don’t plan on it. Got better things to “look” for on Spotify. Like Vautour said, it’s not hard finding great music, there is soo much great stuff out there, just don’t be lazy.
records aren’t selling, because the recording industry picks and chooses who they want to be popular. also, because people are broke. McJobs barely pay the rent. Welcome to the McEra Wes Borland.
Sounds like you should be working on your resume, mad_shiddy.
I’ve seen that joke so many times on this website, but very some reason I almost spat my pepsi all over my computer screen today. Props
Fucking A. Well said. Very few bands deserve to be on my preorder for life list, but those bands make amazing records every time.
What is with that picture, shiddy? Is one of them a dude? Or is that just some lesbian love scene? Either way, seeing this picture before you comment generally affects the way I view your comment…do something about that
Oh boy…just realized this is thePRP where everything is frowned upon…i suppose ill be pinned as an insensitive lesbian hater now haha
it’s actually Tim and Eric of Tim and Eric’s Awesome Show. However, your “joke” wasn’t funny…that’s why someone gave you a thumbs down…although I’m sure you like “Thumbs up”…your ass.
no joke intended…your avatar sucks
^ made me lol
I’m old enough to be in between these 2 worlds. Between the folks who buy records, and the kids who download everything.
I’m one of the small few who download to preview and buy if I like it. I, nor others like me will sustain the music industry as it was. And “what it was” is what Wes and others who rail against the current state of things want to preserve. “Legends” will never again be.
The “kids” and tech will continue change the industry. For better and “worse”.
Really, I could go on but it isn’t anything that hasn’t been said 10000000 times already. The future will be fine. Just enjoy the sounds. \m/
This is one of those guys I just can’t hang with. The “I try before I buy” dudes. Gimme a fucking break. I find it hard as FUCK to believe that every record you download and enjoy gets purchased subsequently. In the best of scenarios (like on payday) I’d bet you actually pay for 1 out of every 10 records that, 20 years ago, you would have been content with paying for.
This makes about as much sense as a guy finding a bag of blow in the street, LOVING what he’s getting from said free blow, and then making a concentrated effort to find its originating party just to throw 50 bucks their way just to show your appreciation.
Seriously, what the fuck? You already HAVE it for FREE! What exactly compels you to get off your fat ass and drive down to the Sam Goody (or whatevers left these days) to pay for something you’re already listening to? Is it guilt about the poor white guy who plays drums in the band not seeing his menial cut of the 9.99 you paid at Best Buy? Or is it that you’re really keen on this tired, dysfunctional record company system that’s worked out so well for everyone?
You’re right about one thing, this HAS been said 10000000 times and I get more tired of hearing it every time. It’s like a fucking involuntary response now. I’m taking a goddamn stand. I haven’t paid for music in at least 8 years and probably never will again, unless they can make a product that can compete with FREE music. If your band puts out a continuously kick ass product, I WILL however shell out the 50 bucks it costs me to get through the door of some shitty club your playing at. Oh but fuck those 30 dollar t-shirts what the fuck is that?
OK I’m done.
Quit drinking at 9:34am and making posts. 8 years? That’s some repugnant shit.
I’ll take MMM’s word for it cuz I know I can’t be the only one.
Yeah dude, I pay for what I can and dld the rest. I couldn’t find the new Dysrhythmia CD, but when I come across it and have the dough, that sucker’s mine.
I get sick of the same talk, and most of it is assigning blame to record companies or getting burnt in the past from paying for a crappy CD.
Take some fucking accountability. Most people here missed Wes’s point, or are in denial of what he said is right and true.
It doesn’t (really) matter how much the artist makes, just ’cause Pete Jackson makes a few mil each movie doesn’t mean he shouldn’t get paid top dollar for his next kickass feature. (Thanks fuckhead, I know it’s a double negative)
These “products” are art, this art enriches our lives, my life needs music more than it needs food.
Sure, I’ve been a part of the problem. I continuously try to develop my positive role on the planet, and minimize negative output.. And though it’s still a lot sometimes, excuses and delusions and lying to myself is when things get dicey.
At least be like, “Damn, I just don’t have the dough, I’d buy it of I could, sorry but I need this shit.” That’s better, but quit making excuses.
I wish I could be more succinct in this subject, but I still feel some who read this will desperately guide its message out the other ear.
It’s stealing, stealing affects at least more than one person very negatively. Stop making excuses.
Oh, and I’m irritated no one told me the new Slightly Stoopid CD came out earlier this year.. So if you haven’t heard it, dld it. And if you dig it, buy it…. If you can. (:
..and I love the last vid of J. Bannon I saw on ThePRP regarding his stance of just keeping his head above water, I have nothing but love and respect for his steeze.
My biggest thing is slapping bands in the face, who havr done nothing but enrich my life with their beautiful and tortured music, even if its with the tiniest glove.
Thats me all sober baby, fresh off a good nights sleep. You’d really fucking hate my drunk rants. Nice rebuttal rehashing exactly what the first guy said to prompt my ire, by the way. Really put things in a new (by which I mean same ol’) light.
Hahahaha. You mad.
Here ya go: http://tinyurl.com/9xwnjyy Thats half of ‘em. (i’m in the process of moving and the others are boxed)
And since you’ve already proved you can’t ask questions before you open your mouth and assume. I’ll only tell you “What exactly compels me to get off my fat ass…” (i wish) if you /actually/ wanna know. Otherwise, there’s much more to get mad about than people actually buying music. \m/
I do the same thing. I often find new music (mostly of unsigned bands) on blogs, download it, listen to it (not two, three or twenty times but usually just once) and then I buy it if I like it. Directly from the band, if possible.
Bandcamp actually is a great thing when it comes to buying stuff from unsigned bands. Pretty often they have physical CDs or Vinyl availabe for sale on there – and when you buy anything physical, you directly get an album download. Awesome for people who just can’t wait (I live in Germany so I’d have to wait 3 to 4 weeks otherwise). And don’t say “just listen to the pirated version instead”, that just doesn’t do it for me.
Bandcamp rocks. Has put a serious dent in my wallet and helped me find a ton of great bands. Check out this blog: http://metalbandcamp.com Also “Project Rodney” http://beta.projectrodney.com
Not as good as Bandcamp IMO but shows promise.
What the fucking fuck? Seriously, get the fuck off your high horse buddy, I am sure as shit that Wes has enough money to pay for all that nice recording gear so he doesn’t have to pay to go into a studio. If your record still isn’t selling, then maybe, just MAYBE, it isn’t very good.
I see bands like O’Brother and City of Ships who do the rounds, do as much stuff on their own and guess what, they’re making money. Oh, they happen to write great music also.
I’m assuming you meant a different band than O’Brother, as I’ve seen them 1 1/2 times (after seeing them the first time, I was in no hurry to get there early to see them open) and out of the 350 or so bands I’ve seen, they’re easily in the bottom 10. Potential, but boring as fuck.
Really? Beneath Your Garden Window is one of my favorite albums of the last year. Oh well, different stroke for folk as they say!
Could it be that many don’t find the new BLB album all that impressive and we now live in an era where it’s easy to preview music before buying it? No longer will I excitedly make my way to the record store on a release date only to be heartbroken by a Supercharger or a Digimortal. I buy music when I like it and I attend shows and buy t-shirts for bands that impress me. But unless your band’s name is Deftones or Every Time I Die, I probably won’t be preordering shit. Create something I want in my collection forever or enjoy the $0.03 you get from my one Spotify listen. It sucks that the end result may mean that some bands go unnoticed, but I think it also means that bands are now forced to make memorable albums in order to get recognition. It’s a tradeoff.
really could not have said it better myself…shit you also nailed two albums i bought and hated and named two of the bands i will preorder for (BTBAM also gets preordered nowadays).
Fuck!!! My above response was meant for THIS comment!! Haha oh well, this is what happens when I’m on this site on my phone to conceal the fact that I’m not doing anything at work. But yeah, well said.
Supercharger is underrated. Digimortal is not.
Actually, only the song Supercharger is underrated, which I guess puts the album in its rightful place of below everything else MH. Still better than a lot of bullshit out there though right? (I know you could say that about anything.)
Good point…no one ever talks about the SONG supercharger, that one kicked a bit of ass…the rest of the album was crap
Fuck all this boring news, is Meshuggah working on a new album yet?
I smell community service.
2 whole thumbs down? Wes must have called in friends for a favor.
“It’s sad because a lot of people aren’t going to be able to afford to make music their lives and make that second follow up or third record.”
News flash Wes…there was NEVER a lot of people able to afford making music their lives. You ever heard of the term “starving artist?” It’s usually on the lucky, talentless, face painting, hacks that somehow fall ass-backwards into success and then come crawling out of the pile of irrelevance that their career inevitably spiraled into, to complain about the fans not buying their 3rd or 4th piece of shit album. Nice of you to write…we’re all full-up on bullshit here though.
Someone just bought their ticket to the Mushroomhead-Fest hmm?
So go ahead and take all the quarters & dimes out of the homeless jar, take their coffee filters to wipe their ass, too.. They’re homeless anyways, right?
.
Triflin’.
Wes Borland must have a multiple personality disorder. Its not that his music sucks, he is just having creative differences…with himself!
“Now anybody can make a record for nothing and they can do it at home and it sounds great…there are people that have made records probably for free at home and they would never have been able to put anything out before.” -Wes Borland
“It’s sad because a lot of people aren’t going to be able to afford to make music their lives and make that second follow up or third record…That’s the biggest loss, people not being able to afford to make music.” – Wes Borland…same interview
Contradiction much?
“Black Light Burns Records Are Sounding Like Shit, But Somehow Everyone Seems To Have Heard It”.
Or have I misquoted?
Shit sells but who’s buying, huh?
One post, one community service. Boom.
Oh damn, make that 2 posts.
Who cares, DJ Lethal(check twitter with full apology!) is back in Limp Bizkit.Time for Wes to focus on his REAL band and hold that Gold yall! CASH MONEY!
…sorry… super drunk after watching the Tigers beat the Yankees in extra innings.
