System Of A Down Frontman Launches Kickstarter For Orca Project

System Of A Down frontman Serj Tankian is going the Kickstarter route to try and get his new symphony project Orca off the ground. Tankian shared the following on the fundraising campaign, which you can contribute to at this location:

“Hello Friends,

I am very excited to share my most personal, compelling musical project to date: my first-ever full symphony called ORCA. I have an incredible opportunity to record and perform ORCA live with the world renowned Das Karussell Orchestra (featuring members of the Bruckner Orchester) at Brucknerhaus in Linz, Austria on October 28th, 2012 and with your involvement and support, we can make it happen!

Many of you know my work in rock music, between System of a Down and my solo album releases. While I have rearranged some of my past rock compositions to be performed as orchestral pieces, such as the Elect The Dead Symphony in 2010, ORCA is the first 4 act symphony that I have composed, a mix of early 20th century compositional styles combined with the powerful range of film scoring. I decided to name my symphony ORCA because orcas “appear to have no parallel outside humans” in terms of their cultural faculties. An orca is really a dolphin with much darker tendencies. I see this dichotomy as a great metaphor for humanity.

Last year, I wrote and recorded a professionally sampled studio version with the goal of being able to record it properly with a full orchestra….this was not something I could capture in a small home studio. I was able to play with The Das Karussell Orchestra at Brucknerhaus during the Elect The Dead Symphony world tour, which was an amazing experience. I shared my sampled recording of ORCA with them, and together we made plans for the live performance and recording to fully bring the work to life and share and distribute it to as many people as possible.

We have put together many different ways for fans to get involved and be a part of ORCA from the ground up, all of which are outlined in this Kickstarter campaign. We tried to think of ways to give you every bit of music possible, and interactive, personalized experiences for those who can attend the show on October 28th, and for those who can’t. Our goal is $25,000.00, which is the minimal cost for the recording. Any additional funds will be used to cover the expenses of mixing, mastering and promotion. We will keep you updated with news and progress so you are able to see what we do as this project grows.

Please check it out and I hope to share this journey for ORCA with you all. Thank you for the support.

Peace,

Serj

i understand like new rock or hardcore bands trying to use kickstarter to keep them going or just to keep doing what they love but seriously serj tankian? i just went a little over a month ago to the deftones/ system of a down show and i payed 72.50 for my ticket that landed me in the last few rows of the pavillion at the comcast theater in mansfield, ma. i wouldve been slight sympathetic if it was like at least a million dollars but ur goal is only $25 thousand dollars?u know people will still buy it as fans or go see it and make u that money back either way, so yes, boooooooo to you serj. i never believed in all your views but i respected you for them being as convicted as you were to those beliefs but this almost nullifies everything, your doing the shit you supposedly hate. and even though you guys (system) put on a great show, we all know it was for money and on top of it, i went for deftones as always cus at least there fucking real.

    • This is ridiculous. One of the biggest names in all of rock music, most obviously a millionaire, an artist who gets tens of thousands of dollars (maybe even hundreds) for every single concert, is asking for 25.000 from fans?
      This is lame and ridiculous.
Kickstarter should be for struggling and beginning artists who have no other means to fund their creations.
Not for millionaires who could sell their dirty laundry on Ebay for more than these 25K.
Screw you Serj, I won’t be fooled into contributing.

    • Your self titled albums sucked Serj. I have little to no faith that you will deliver on a symphonic opus. Maybe if you posted a kickstarter campain for a SOAD album you would get me to donate. Not that SOAD needs my money by any means, but if I can get a good digital download for $5 like I can with this Orca thing, I would do it.

Donate 5 dollars and I get a digi pak of the whole album? sounds like a good deal, I think some people are over reacting, or maybe I’m under reacting, oh well, can’t wait to hear it anyway.

I don’t have a problem with this. I don’t care about any of Serj’s shit that isn’t written for SOAD, but If artists try to collect money from fans upfront in order to make albums, that’s fine with me. No one is putting a gun to their heads. If this becomes an effective way for artists to keep making music in the age of downloading, I won’t judge. There are very few bands I would give money to upfront these days, but hey, spend your money how you please kids.

        • Honestly, I’m always impressed by how level-headed you stay on this site. Seriously, everyone else has their balls perpetually in a knot, while you stay calm and collected.

He’s right though, it’s not like our tax dollars are going to Kickstarter. If Crosses, or Will Haven, or any other band that I like did it, I would drop cash in a second. Usually bands have something awesome to offer proportionate to your donation. It’s not a plague yet, but I’m sure people will start abusing Kickstarter soon enough.
